The skilled nursing facility has, over the past several years, developed a partnership with the Hamburg School System to provide internships to high school students interested in careers in health care. Hamburg Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Art Robinson first approached Elder-Wood Health Care at Lakewood Administrator Michael Murphy about the possibility of creating an internship program in 1999. His desire was to provide real-life educational experiences for students in order to better prepare them for the real world.

Murphy also credits Hamburg High School internship coordinator Michael Karpie and Superintendent Peter Roswell for their assistance in setting up the Allied Health Program. Through this program, Elder-Wood's Lakewood facility has become a teaching nursing home, hosting students in their junior and senior years interested in learning more about physical, occupational and speech therapy; nursing; social services, and medical services. As part of their internship, students are exposed to all the disciplines involved in resident care. Submit your community datebook events to sarahthesunnews.net.
