Still in her early 20s, Leslie has made the climb step by logical step. She was six when she appeared in an episode of the all-but-forgotten TV series, Beu-lah. She was 14 when she won $12,500 in a TV contest show which disappeared at the time of the quiz show scandals. She was in her teens when Mitch Miller presented her on his Sing Along series.

Now Leslie Uggams has made television's big time: star of her own show, which had its premiere Sept. 28. The Leslie Uggams Show, a variety show with emphasis on comedy, was one of those flukes, "My husband and I had Just moved into a New York apartment when I finished singing at the Copacabana last March," she says-. "It was on Central Park West, with a view, and it seemed sensible because Gra-hame (Grahame Pratt, her husband of the last four years) was a stockbroker working on Wall Street. "We'd been talking about making a situation comedy pilot for NBC, and I went to Puerto Rico for a club date.

When I got back we were talking to CBS about a pilot for a situation comedy: the idea was to hire three writers to come up with a format and to pick the best and shoot it." working in sketches;" she said. "I studied acting besides." "I think the most interesting part of the series, for me, anyway, will be the weekly sketch. The Folks on Sugar Hill. That's where I grew up, on Sugar Hill in Washington Heights in New York. "It's going to be a sort of black adaptation of The Honey-mooners or The Goldbergs, and Lillian Hayman, who was in the Broadway show with me, will play my mother.

I'll have a hippie sister. If the show has any racial significance, it will be that the sketch has a representative of each member of the present black generation." Leslie grew up in show business. Her father sang in the famous Hall Johnson Choir, and her mother was in the chorus line of the Cotton Club. Leslie At that point, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was cancelled and CBS, in a programming bind, approached Leslie with the idea of an hour variety show. It was to be produced by Saul Lson and Ernie Chambers, Smothers' alumni with whom Leslie had worked earlier.

It was late in the selling season when The Leslie Uggams Show was announced by the network. And the show is in one of the schedule's toughest hours, opposite NBC's But Leslie seems as serene about her television future as a winning politician after election day. "Well, I've been singing ever since I can remember and I had the Broadway show. Hallelujah, Baby, so I've had experience showed early musical talent and had her education at the Professional Children's School in New York and the Juilliard School of Music. Both parents, however, quit show business after Leslie was born.

Leslie, in spite of the heady experience of playing the top clubs of the world, is happy to settle down to what she hopes will be a steady job. "You get sort of lonely on the road," she reflected. "You read a lot and play a lot of scrabble and gin rummy, but it's still lonely." As is customary, she owns a piece of her own show through her production company. The company is called Smaggu Productions. Secret meaning? "No, silly," she said.

"That's Uggams spelled backwards." "My family owned a bicycle factory in Montreal, and I was a mechanic, a truck driver, a jack of all trades, really. I met my wife Lina in 1949, when I was 22 and had had only a few months of singing lessons." She was the one to suggest that he become an opera singer. You go to any gas station and ask the attendant if he wants to become an opera singer, and he'll say 'What's Mr. Quilico recently moved to Toronto from Montreal and teaches part-time at the Royal Conservatory of Music, to have more time with his wife and children.
