FINE DRINKS BEER WINE FOOD 535 CL1U1B 535 THIRD STREET men's 48 GAUGE SHEER The morale-building work of giving each wounded soldier returning from overseas a free telephone call to any place in the United States is being done by the Volunteer Army Canteen service, which this week appealed to San Bernardino valley citizens for contributions with which to carry on their project. Since the idea of giving returning servicemen free phone calls originated last year, the canteen corps, more commonly known as the Vacs, has spent $40,000 on calls. In addition to private contributions, the Vacs sponsor motion picture premiers, plays and raffles, and have recently established a candy bar in the Hollywood canteen, to obtain funds.

A convoy of wounded soldiers returning from Okinawa was met Wednesday afternoon by Camp Haan by a contingent of the Vacs from Hollywood, including Miss Anita Louise, motion-picture ac DEES Sheer 48 gauge- rayon hosiery In full Fashioned with cotton reinforced toe and rayon top. Stanley Myers at the debarkation office, Camp Haan.

The corps was organized in February, 1942, at Ft. MacArthur and since then has grown to include 350 active members, many ol whom are film notables. Mary Livingston, wife of comedian Jack Benny, is vice-president of the organization. Other prominent members are Claudette Colbert, Anita Louise, Barbara Stanwyck, Mrs. Hoagy Carmichael, Mrs.

A White for tress. The women gave the servicemen fresh milk, in many cases, the first they had tasted in many years, and saw that their telephone calls were completed. Mrs. Alexander Hall, president of the corps, said that most servicemen reported the call to their parents, or wife, or sweetheart, is more of a morale builder than the best meal or softest mattress. The telephone calls average around $6 a message, Mrs.

Hall said. The majority of calls are put through at night because the wires are less crowded, although the Vacs have obtained priority for the veterans' calls. Predicting that the work of the Vacs will become more important after the war ends, Mrs. Hall said additional funds will be needed to continue giving free phone calls to the wounded man as they return from the Pacific battlefield. The Volunteer Army canteen service offers its services to four hospitals in the southland, the Birmingham General hospital, Pasadena areas station, Tornay hospital in Palm Springs, and the Santa Ana receiving station, and regular trips are made weekly.

Women from the corps come to Camp Haan each time a convoy arrives, Mrs. Hall said. They are slerted several hours before the summer, col- I or for a I I. Rj it- 1 nice collection of pini colorful floral patterns, necklace and bracelet endearing charm pins and many others. Attractive.
