8 sr High School Athlete of week 2 Top shot putters are at Demarest .1 1 nessee, according to the National High School Sports Record Book, published by the National Federation of State High School V. Cis i U.S. notes its i. WW i vV tit By John Bratinan Correspondent The philosophy of track star Steve Schadler of Bergenfield is simple: get off to a good start, but don't burn out early because the most successful runners are those who have something left for the stretch. That philosophy has worked so well for Schadler in races that he has incorporated it into his overall training program.

"Last year, I really hoped to get into the Millrose Mile," says The Record's Athlete of the Week. "I did a lot more speed work than usual, but I wound up not making it anyway. Then I found myself feeling a little burned out for the rest of the indoor track season. I didn't want to make the same mistake this year." Ironically, the decision to put less emphasis on early-season meets didn't hurt Schadler at alL The senior ran 3:57 in the event at the Princeton Relays Jan. 14, and that qualified Schadler for the Mill-rose Games High School Mile at Madison Square Garden Friday night Schadler beat a field that included entries from Florida and Massachusetts by running a person f5fc Schwartz sr i-aui -i The finest shot putters in the East will be at Demarest High School at 8 p.m.

Thursday for the seventh annual Demarest Invitational Shot Put Meet The meet annually attracts the best shot putters from New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Demarest coach Fred McClaia says New Jersey State outdoor champion Jim Gilligaa of Toms River East, who has thrown 63 feet 5 inches this season, faces his toughest challenge from J. Grant of Liverpool, N.Y., who has a put of 63-3 V4. Pete Lajnmbra of Bristol, and last year's runner-up, Chris Hall of Camden, N.Y, also have bettered 60 feet this year. Area contenders include Jay Sbep-ard of St Joseph Regional, Dave Cement of Demarest, Walt Foster of Wayne Valley, and Mike Neglia of St Joseph Regional, but they are more likely to be aiming for a personal career mark than for a spot in the top four of the 30-man competition.

Ed Ellis, former Patchogue, N.Y. star, set the meet record of 62-9 in 1982. The recent Demarest-Northern Highlands seven-overtime contest in boys basketball has been surpassed by only five games in national high school basketball history. The record of 13 overtimes was set in games in North Carolina and Ten remember one race where I ran in high-top basketball sneakers and jeans, but I wound up winning a State Schadler says with a chuckle. "Combining that with the encouragement of my sister Lisa, 21, a onetime New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Group 4 champion in the 3,000 meters made me want to devote more time to running." The 6-foot 145-pound track ace with a 3.9 grade-point average is considering English, communications, and premed as his college majors.

Georgetown, Princeton, and Stanford are Schadler's major schools of interest; all combine rigorous academic work with a strong track program. Schadler runs three miles before the start of school, and he shoots for a total of 60 miles a week. "I had been running 45-50 miles a week up until this year. That doesn't sound like much of a difference, but I guess it's the difference between running an amount that's not too much of a struggle and the amount I know I have to run in order to win." Schadler has set his sights on the Vitalis Olympic Invitational Feb. 11, the NJSIAA meet in the spring, and the Golden West Invitational in June.

"I'm really keying up for all three events, because I know this is my last chance to win these races. I've come close in a lot of races in my career, but something always seemed to go wrong until the Mill-rose Games. I hope that win will mean the start of a good senior year." If his performance in the Millrose 3 I Ml ui Ironically, both 13-overtime games took place the same night Feb. 29, 1964. The eight-overtime games listed were a Michigan game played Jan.

The inductees are Emit Dul 1934, Leo Gasienica '69, Ray Maladowitz '46, Frank Monash '21, Dennis Petocz '67, George Seventko '32, Albert Slavinsky '44, and Henry Zecker '37, and coaches Fred Mal-kowski and John Misko. SCHAWL al best of 4:14.92. Schadler says he wasn't worried about trailing most of the field for a good part of the race. "It's not so much how many people are in front of you as it is how far behind the leader you are.

As long as I'm within 10-15 yards, I know I have a shot" Schadler didn't begin running seriously until the eighth grade. "I ran in the Junior Olympics that year without having any kind of training. NationalOlympic STANDINGS p.m. EDGEWATER Mark Cieslak, 22, a left-handed pitcher and three-time New Jersey State College Athletic Conference first-team pick as a designated hitter at William Paterson College, was signed over the weekend by Mickey White, the Cincinnati Reds' Eastern Regional scout for an undisclosed amount. Cieslak was one of approximately 15 players who attended a five-day special invitation tryout camp in Tampa, Fla. Only one other player, from Orlando, was signed as a result of the camp. The 6-foot, 210 -pounder was named to the AU-Bergen County first teams in baseball, football, and basketball in the 1978-79 school year while at Palisades Park High School.

As a freshman, he pitched Palisades Park' baseball team to a 3-2, three-hit win over Bound Brook for the Tigers' only New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Group 1 bo -Secaucus at Harrison, 7:30 p.m. Although Cieslak compiled a 7-3 career pitching record as a spot starter and reliever at William Paterson, his most notable contributions in his four years with the varsity baseball team were made with bis bat He finished with a .376 career batting average and 21 home runs. In his final season, Cieslak was selected for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Middle Atlantic Region first team. Cieslak, who played for Little Ferry in the Metropolitan Baseball League, was chosen last summer as the all-league designated hitter (.337 batting average, 17 RBI's, two home runs). During five Met League seasons, he batted .292, and compiled a 3-2 pitching record with one shutout.

"I think he's a tremendous kid. He's a coach's player," said Pioneers baseball coach Jeff Albies. "But it could be difficult for him to make the transition to being specifically a pitcher because he likes to play every day." Cieslak's minor-league assignment has not yet been determined. bb-Park Ridge at Lvndhurst, 7 JO Secaucus p.m. bb-Rutherford at Leonia.
