Foucault who was hospitalized Thursday, died of a neurological disorder, Salpetriere hospital announced. Foucault became a cult figure among students and intellectuals in Europe and the United States. During the last decade he lectured at major American universities and his Wednesday morning seminars at the prestigious College de France were most often packed. The third volume of his "History of Sexuality" was published two weeks ago. Titled "Souci de Soi" (Concern for Self), it maintains that women have been oppressed by men in all societies throughout history.

The series began in 1976 with "La Volonte de Savoir" (The Will to Know), followed earlier this year by "L'Usage des Plaisirs" (The Use of Pleasure). A theme of the volumes was that the pagan pursuit of pleasure, traditional Christian morality, and modern licentiousness all are derived naturally from the same human needs, but that sexual drive has been regarded as independent of the moral basis of all societies only since the 19th Century. Distinction between love, friendship He drew a sharp distinction between love and friendship and maintained that "nonreciprocity" the inability to share in the pleasure of a sexual partner was the underlying dilemma of the modern concept of love and sex. Born in Poitiers, France, in 1926, Foucault was the son of a physician. Active as professor of philosophy at various French universities since 1960, he was named professor of the history of thought systems at the College de France in 1970.

His other works included a widely acclaimed "History of Madness in the Classic Age," published in 1961, followed by an "Archaeology of Human Knowledge," and studies on the history of medicine, the history of prisons, and the philosophy of punishment in human societies. In a statement, Premier Pierre Mauroy praised Foucault as "one of the great French contemporary philosophers." Mauroy said Foucault's "original work sought in history and sociology the explanations of human behavior, seeking to understand, interpret, and also to teach. For this great researcher was also a teacher whose lessons extended far beyond the borders of our country." aiiu in lieu or Tiowers, donations may be made to Toms STAUDT Joseph of Cllffslde Pk, NJ on Sunday, June 24, 1984. Few Israelis knew about the action, though, because continuing labor strife blacked out most newscasts.

The Bank of Israel announced that it was devaluing the Israeli shekel by 2.6 percent, the latest in a series of devaluations aimed at stretching the currency to offset rising prices and wage demands. Previous devaluations and the shekel's general weakness in foreign currency markets have resulted in a sharp deterioration in the value of Israel's currency.
