J3 Hiqh School 14 Opportunistic St. Joseph Bergen title, 3-1 tn a. 3 CO ea cc it By John Bronnan Correspondent EMERSON Combine a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and a 130-: foot foulout, and the St Joseph base- ball team will show you how to turn it into a run. Add a double that hits the foul line, a two-run triple by a player who broke into the lineup six games ago, and superior pitching by Keith Connolly and Brian Branigan, and the result is a $-1 St Joseph victory over Rutherford Friday in the Bergen County Baseball Tournament championship game. "I guess you could say we did what we had to in order to win," said Greg Carney of St Joseph, who suffered a heart attack in midseason and handed the coach's reins over to Brother Thomas Lydon.

Qutch hitting and baserunning enabled St Joseph to score three runs against Rutherford pitcher Tom Ferullo, who allowed only four hits. "Tommy gave us exactly what we wanted. He just got that one pitch up," said Rutherford coach Bob Cavo. i v-'. That one pitch was to Mark Walter in the fourth inning, and Walter turned Ferullo's mistake into the two-run triple that ultimately decided the game.

Peter Ramundo started the rally in the fourth with a two-out double down the left-field line that kicked up chalk on its way into the corner. Craig Connolly followed with a smash that was mishandled at third, and Walter, the next batter, hit a shot into the gap in right-center, scoring Ramundo and Connolly. Walter, a junior from Montvale, broke into the lineup only after Alan Plescia suffered a leg injury near the end of the regular season. The seventh-seeded Green Knights (20-7) took a 1-0 lead in the first on some excellent baserunning by Mike Neglia, who walked on a 5-2 count, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. Tom May lofted a one-out pop foul past first base, and Mike Paskas, Rutherford's first baseman, made a running catch of the ball with his back to the plate.

Neglia tagged and scored on the play. The Bulldogs (25-5 and seeded 10th) got on the board in the fifth, knocking out Connolly in the process. Ferullo walked, moved to second on a single by Bob Merli, and scored on a line single to left by Mark Zielinski. That brought in "co-ace" Branigan, who had a 8-2 record this season a mark Connolly equaled Friday. Branigan got Sam Ferretti on a fly to center, then walked Paskas before getting Bob Witterschein to fly to right "We weren't going to wait to bring in Brian," Carney and Lydon said in unison.

"Brian was well rested, so we knew we'd use him if we got in a jam," said Carney. a Nike Neglia of St Joseph scores on a sacrifice fly as Rutherford catcher Henry Manning resident, was presented with the Lt Thomas Evans MVP Award, named for the player who captained the Ramsey team when it appeared in the County tournament in 1969 and 1970. Evans, an Annapolis graduate, was killed while flying an experi gled earlier in the inning, so Ferret-ti's blast was just a few feet short of tying the game. "It's been a struggle all season," said Carney. "But moments like this have made it worth it" NOTES Branigan, a Ridgewood Ferretti, the hero for Rutherford throughout the County tournament, put a scare into the St Joseph rooters in the seventh when he launched a rocket to left field that Walter pulled down just in front of the fence.

It was more a case of defeat being dictated by a talling-away fastball. Left-hander John Skarzynski may be only No. 2 among Hoffman pitchers, but he had the upper hand yesterday in shackling the Cavos and winning the Group 1 baseball championship of the New Jersey State In-terscholastic Athletic Association tournament Group 1 baseball "His fastball was running away and we were hitting the ball in the air," Emerson coach Larry Ennls said after watching Hoffman fielders glove 13 assorted popups and flyouts.

"I'd rather hit the ball on the ground because then two people have to handle it Only one fielder is needed on a popup." Emerson (29-3) was limited to three hits, all 'ogles. Two were by shortstop Rich Cleary, who may go with Division World Series champion Ramapo College in the falL That team is coached by Ennls's son, Mickey. "He wasn't any better than some pitchers we've seen, but he got the ball in on the fists a lot," said Cleary, who entered the game with a .480 average and went 2-for-3. "The first one I hit was a curveball and the second was a fastball." The game was scoreless after three innings, with both Skarzynski and Emerson's Chip Barker working on one-hitters. Barker walked Kevin Gorcryck and Skarzynski consecutively, but picked off Gorczyck on a bang-bang play that was accomplished with vintage Emerson precision as second baseman Rob Leone slipped in behind the runner.

Hoffman (19-3) appeared shaky in that inning as a confused Skarzynski was nearly thrown out at second after Pete Smith's blooper dropped in for a hit down the right-field line. When he beat the throw, Emerson's fortunes began drifting steadily downhill Tailing stops (0-1). Central Mack in.li piwaamo w'm -4 1 2 (n n--t mno-oo2 Cliff. Center fielder Kevin Moran cut short the rally by throwing out Thompson, who tried to stretch the hit into a triple. But the lead was substantial enough because the Cavos could not put together a rally. Moran singled to lead off the third, but, two outs later, was thrown out trying to steal.

Cleary opened the fourth with a hit but was not advanced. He singled with two out in the sixth and was stranded when T. J. Juliana's sizzling liner was caught in right field. It was one of three liners by the luckless Cavos grabbed by Hoffman fielders.

"Our not bitting is a case of us facing better pitchers as the season got to the tournaments Ennls said. Emerson handed Hoffman its last run in the sixth on an infield single, an error, a wild pitch, and passed ball. "We didn't know much about Emerson, but we respected them," said Hoffman coach George Krzyzan-owskL "You have to be impressed with a team that plays 31 games and wins 29 of them." Skarzynski (9-0) is less heralded than No. 1 pitcher Thompson, the Hoffman coach said, mainly because Thompson throws a 92 mile-per-hour fastball as opposed to the 83 m.p.h.ball thrown by yesterday's winner. If an Emerson player is named to the Region 1 team that plays in the NJSIAA All-Star series at Princeton Saturday, he may get another shot at Skarzynski, who has been named to the Central squad.

But after yesterday, one try may be enough for the Cavos. BCCs Uelen is 80th FORT MYERS, Fla. Matt Uelen of Wyckoff, the only individual qualifier for Bergen Community College in the National Junior College Golf Championships, shot a four-round total of 318 to place 80th among a field of 230 golfers. Jim Smith of team champion McClennon finished first with a two-under-par 284. BCC, the Garden State Athletic Conference and Region 19 champs, finished 28th.

said Ruback, the reigning Bergen County Group 3-4 champion. "He hit the ball very hard and just made every shot "McGeehan was the toughest opponent I've ever faced," he added.
