But Hasbrouck Heights baseball coach Tom Kraljic nearly stole the show from Luciano. The loquacious second-year coach, who led the Aviators to an 18-9 record and a berth in the Bergen County tournament in his second season, thanked everyone but his kindergarten teacher in a hilarious, enthusiastic speech that reflects his colorful coaching style. Luciano and Kraljic were joined by Ron Banta of Cresskill and John Puzio of Bergen Catholic, who shared tennis coach-of the-year honors, and Tenafly's Bob Waterman, track coach of the year. three years.

"I figured that deserved a special tribute," said Jockish. So Schadler was presented with a special achievement award at last night's dinner at the Fiesta, much to the delight of the more than 200 spectators present. Schadler joined 43 other All-Bergen stars in track, tennis, golf, and baseball, but even though the Stanford-bound senior was the only athlete singled out for the achievement award, he wasn't the featured attraction. That honor belonged to retiring Old Tappan golf coach Dan Luciano, who won his third coach-of-the-year award in his 23 seasons with the Knights. "The German boys are well-skilled players," notes Winiarski. "But, physically the Americans are bigger, which makes a difference at this level." Kramer, who plays left wing, adds that last week's hot, humid weather didn't helped his former teammates, either. "It's very difficult for them playing in the heat," he says. "They haven't been playing very well." The young Germans were kept busy sightseeing in New York, and taking trips to Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore, thanks to their hosts. Reciprocating the hospitality they received here, Unterhach-ing's contingent has invited the Ho-Ho-KusSaddle River team to visit Germany next July.

"They have a tournament planned, with other German teams competing," Winiarski says. "The question for us now is raising the money to go. eluding travel, expenses for each player will be around so we're going to have to put our heads together and come up with a plan." By Bob Kuzbyt Correspondent SADDLE RIVER The Ho-Ho-KusSaddle River 13-14-year-old soccer team got its first taste of international competition last week when it hosted the SpVgg Unterhaching team from Munich, West Germany. The idea originated with one of the local players, Jacob Kramer, and his father, Gunther, president of BMW of North America, a subsidiary of the German auto manufacturer. Jacob, 13, joined the Ho-Ho-KusSaddle River team shortly after the Kramers moved here last summer from Munich.

This year, he and his father suggested inviting Unterhaching, Jacob's former team, to the United States for a series of games. "I wrote a letter inviting them," says Toby Winiarski, president of the Ho-Ho-Kus-Saddle River club. "They raised some money, and got some sponsorship to pay for the trip. Then, we agreed on dates, and arranged for local parents to host the group." In their first three games, the Germans lost to their hosts, 2-1; tied Mahwah United, 1-1; and lost to Belleville, 5-1, before Wednesday's match against the (3-1-3) GartwtO 0020202 4 03 (1-5) N.
