To make a decision on what happened in this game would be unfair." Simms directed the only scoring drive, a modest 33-yard march that set up rookie Ali Haji-Sheikh's 49-yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the first half. On the previous possession, however, Simms had a chance to wrap up the job by bitting Earnest Gray with a scoring bomb. Now, with the opener against San Diego seven days away, they probably wish they had more time to get ready. In their final dress rehearsal last night against New Orleans, the Jets showed more of their weaknesses than their strengths. The 17-10 defeat was an Saints 17, Jets 10 alarming experience for the battered Jets, who finish with a 2-2 preseason record. Except for star back Freeman McNeil, who rushed nine times for 75 yards, none of the Jets played to the standard expected of them. Richard Todd, playing behind a patched-up offensive line, spent most of the time trying to run away from a strong New Orleans pass rush.

Todd, with no regular wide receivers playing, completed 10 of 17 passes for 142 yards and was sacked three times. Pat Ryan, who replaced Todd midway through the final quarter, was sacked twice but directed the Jets to a last-minute touchdown. Dwayne Crutchfield's one-yard run with 45 seconds left produced the Jets' only touchdown. Jerry Holmes then recovered an onside kick, but the Saints held and took over on downs. Defensively, the Jets were manhandled by the New Orleans offense.

Ken Stabler and Dave Wilson each threw a touchdown pass as the Saints rolled up a 311-261 advantage in total offense. Much of the Jets' yardage was gained in the fourth quarter, when the Saints were using reserves. "The biggest disappointment was that we didn't get off the ball, offensively and defensively," said Jets coach Joe Walton. seconds in a 17-play march. Stabler had a 23-yard touchdown pass to Groth erased by a holding penalty against Stan Brock before the Saints settled for a 29-yard field goal by Morten Anderson.

The Jets answered with an 11-play, 68-yard drive that ate up six minutes 27 seconds. The key plays were a third-down offsides call against Jim Wilks of New Orleans and a Todd-to-McNeil pass for 35 yards to the New Orleans 19. Todd, however, was forced to throw away a pass because of a strong rush on third-and-three, and the Jets had to be content with a 30-yard field goal by Pat Leahy. The Saints went ahead, 10-3, with a 58-yard drive. Russell Erxleben's 47-yard punt to the Jets' three put the Jets in a hole, and an intentional grounding call against Todd, resulting in a 16-yard loss and loss of a down, helped the Saints to good field position.

REDSKINS 27, BILLS 19 (at Orchard Park, N.Y.) Washington's defense tallied first and quarterbacks Joe Theis-mann and Bob Holly, from Clifton, each added touchdown passes to give Washington its victory over Buffalo. SEAHAWKS 20, 49ERS 6 (At San Francisco) Jim Zorn and Dave Krieg, battling for the Seattle starting quarterback job, each led the team to a touchdown as the Seahawks beat San Francisco. PACKERS 39, CARDINALS 27 (at St. Louis) Mike McCoy sprinted 64 yards to score with a pass interception and Harlan Huckleby gathered in his second touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, lifting Green Bay to a victory over St. Louis.

LIONS 34, BENGALS' 7 (at Pontiac, Mich.) Reserve quarterback Gary Danielson broke open a close game with three second-half touchdown passes to lead Detroit past Cincinnati. BEARS 20, CHIEFS 17 (at Chicago) Bob Thomas kicked a 31-yard field goal with 7:26 remaining in overtime to give Chicago its win over Kansas City. "They beat us to the punch. We didn't play up to our capabilities." Walton hopes many of his injured players several of whom did not make the trip to New Orleans can be ready for the Chargers. "If we get some of our injured players back, we will be a good team," he said.

"If not, we will struggle." Stabler, who will be the Saints' starting quarterback in the opener against St Louis, completed 5-of-9 passes for 69 yards before retiring at halftime with a 10-3 lead. Wilson threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Groth after a foulup by the Jets' punting unit gave New Orleans its first possession of the second half. Punter Chuck Ramsey saw a strong rush coming and threw a three-yard pass to linebacker John Wood ring three yards short of a first down at the Saints' 35. The Saints then treated their 58,176 Su-perdome fans to a 65-yard scoring drive, capped by the Wilson-to-Groth pass. George Floyd of the Jets fumbled away the ensuing kickoff and suffered a sprained knee on the play.

However, an end-zone interception by Kirk Springs ended the Saints' threat. McNeil reeled off a 39-yard run to the New Orleans 41, but on fourth-and-one from the 32, Mike Augustyniak was hit hard as he tried to jump over the line of scrimmage. He fumbled out of bounds, giving the Saints the ball. The Jets were fortunate to get out of the first half trailing only 10-3. New Orleans dominated play and physically intimidated the visitors.

New Orleans had a 178-107 edge in total offense, and ran 35 offensive plays to 23 by the Jets, but the Saints hurt themselves with four holding penalties. Both teams had time-consuming drives in the first quarter, but had to settle for field goals. New Orleans, after receiving the opening kickoff, used seven minutes and 43 ing free safety Lyle Blackwood to intercept at the Dolphins' three. "That was out of character for me," said Simms, who heard chants of "We Want Brun-ner!" from the crowd of 58,732 after the theft "I should have just thrown it out there hard, but instead, I kind of lofted it. Next time I'll throw it so either Earnest catches it or no one catches it." Simms, who also had three passes dropped by receivers, said he was unfazed by the boos he received at the outset of the game, and the call for Brunner after his interception.

"I'm just going to have to get used to it," he said. "It's something I'm going to have to live with, I guess." "We weren't ready to play," he said. "I had been warning them all week something like this might happen.

Maybe this will knock them off that high horse they were riding." "I don't know if anything good can come out of this, but I'm glad it happened this week, and not next," said linebacker Brian Kelley.
