C-9 rniiNTifs nfwjwfy Montville wins Group 2 crown Palmer clears 6-11 in Summit WEST WINDSOR Senior Bob Ferla pitched a three-hitter and drove home the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to lead Montville to a 3-1 win over South Brunswick in the New Jersey State Intcrscholastic Athletic Association Croup 2 baseball final. The only run Ferla surrendered was unearned. South Brunswick's Roger Craig singled in the second Inning and scored when shortstop Kevin Puentcs booted a ground ball with two out and the bases loaded. Montville. which finished its season with a 16-10 record, scored twice in the first inning.

Puentes singled after Tom llolzmann led off with a walk. Sophomore Pat Byrnes followed with an RBI-single, Puentes moving to third Ferla then delivered his sacrifice fly. Ferla scored an Insurance run in the third, doubling to lead off the Inning and coming home on Scott Roman's single. Ferla struck out eight in raising his Stan Muslal record to 10 2. July 8. Palmer, who jumped in winning the County Meet of Champions last week, cleared the height on his second try and just missed at seven feet. The Bergen County high school record for the event is 6-9 by Hackensack's Skip Johnson in 1972. Johnson also cleared 6-10 in a 1972 AAU event. Palmer qualified at 42-10 in the triple jump and Teaneck sprinter Mike Iris-Thompson was second in the 100 and 220.
