Earl Hindman, who plays detective Bob Reid in Ryan's Hope (ABC), had his hair cropped in order to play a 1940s redneck in the movie, Greased Lightning. When he returned to his role in the soap, his co-workers almost didn't recognize him and the producers were less than happy with his drastic change of appearance. Needless to say.

Earl is letting his hair grow. It could have been worse, he could have been playing the Yul Brynner role in a touring company of The King and I. FANS TAKE TO FONZIE-LOO-KALIKE. When Larry Fleischman first appeared as the hoody mechanic, Benny Sago, in All My Children (ABC), it was supposed to be for a short time. However, his popularity in the role of Brooke English's boy friend led to his becoming a permanent cast member.

As the viewers know, Benny continues to be the bane of Phoebe's existence since she not only resents his getting involved with her niece but also fears that he's on to her schemes. Sago's saga should prove a definite plus in the Intricately plotted daytime serial. STARS FALL ON INDIANA: Encore Productions, which specializes in putting together short theatrical tours of Broadway plays comprised entirely of soap opera stars, will have a real treat coming up in November. The sprightly comedy, Absurd Person Singular, will open in South Bend, with a cast of such stellar soap actors as Helen Gallagher (Maeve of Ryan's Hope), Kate Mulgrew (Mary Ryan Fenelli of Ryan's Hope), John Reilly (Dan Stewart of CBS's As the World Turns), Lewis Arlt (David Sutton of CBS's Search for Tomorrow), Jada Rowland (Carolee Simpson of NBC's The Doctors), and James Pritchett (Dr. Matt Powers of The Doctors).

Subsequent cities lined up for performances of the play include Davenport, Iowa; Roanoke and Norfolk, Raleigh, N.C.; and Scranton, Pa.
