The death In New York City recently of Mrs. May Waldron Robson, brings to memory that she was a former popular and well-known resident of Buffalo. Half a century ago Carroll Street was a choice residential street and many prominent and well-to-do BufTalonlan3 dwelt therein. The Waldron family. lust below Ellicott Street, had many friends and handsome and buxom May Waldron was not only the beauty but the acknowledged belle of the street.

Nearly or Quite BO years ago she married a young and little known actor, named Stuart Robson. He won great renown on the American and European stage and for many years was associated with William H. Crane in that marvelous production of Shakespeare's "Merry Wives of "Windsor." Old-time Buffalo thanter-sroers will recall that wonderful classic of the stage as it was presented at the old Academy of Music. Never, before or since, was there such a gorgeous production of the Bard of Avon's great comedy and May Waldron, then Mrs. Stuart Robson, was the feminine star of the cast.

Until Mr. Robson's death, his clever wife was. always one of the chief supports In his various-companies. Although Shakespeare's great comedy Is now but rarely per-formed, it was long regarded by such eminent critics as Warton and Ben Johnson as the greatest of the Bard's comic creations. The ludicrous misfortunes of Falstaff, into which he is betrayed by the "merry wives," Mistress Page and Mistress Ford and the Intrigue surrounding dainty and eweet Anne Page, form the principal action of the masterpiece of stage comedies.

As "Sweet Anne Page" and again as merry Mistress Page, May Waldron won not only the admiration of the critics and the public, but likewise established her reputation as ft clever and versatile actress. I am eorry to record her final exit from life's stage but I am pleased to remind Buffalonians but the determination and confidence that flow from a sound conception of life's duties and life's possibilities. When "tallow dips" served for candles and candlesticks, coffee, to many, was a strange beverage. When I was a boy I used to see many folk take a bowl of coffee, fill it with bits of bread until not a drop of coffee was left unabsorbed.

That was considered by many persons as a great delicacy. I have seen hundreds of children in Buffalo mostly early resl-dents of the district lyins between Jefferson, High. Bailey and Sycamore streets, using lard as a substitute for butter as a spread for bread. And many thousands of Buffalo kiddles, in the "good old days" considered "bread and molasses" as the finest sort of a. treat.
