In market utterly lacking In vitality, only two of the higher priced stocks, Emsco Derrick and Edison common, sold In volume in excess of 1,000 shares on the Los Angeles stock exchange today. There was just as little doing on the curb, and not a singlo iaaue outside the cent class attained the 1,000 sales mark.

ran an irregular course ind the close found most issues selling at the low for the day. International Reinsurance and Emsco were the two llvest spots on the board, as well as being among the most heavily traded. The insurance stock sold 800 shares between 52 and M'i, with the close at the high, for a gain of points on the day. Emsco turned 1,500 shares to a hich and close nt 341:, a gain of a point, after selling as low as 33 earlier. Oils were distinctly weaker, with Standard, Richfield, Rio Grande and Union Asoclates, and others of the leaders, all selling off.

Slight gains were noted here and there, but not enough to offset the slump in the higher priced issues. Edison, on turnover, dropped of a point, and Pacific Lighting was off 1V4 on an even 100 shares sold. Trading in these two covered about all of the activity In the utility division. Transameiica lacked a following and sales of 200 shares held to 138 '4 oil day, a loss of 1: compared to the previous close. First National was down 2 points to 125i on 900 turnover.

Kemper Radio was the most active curb stock, turning 3,850 shares to a new high and close at $2.70, up 5c above the close of Monday, when it made its first appearance In the curb list. bakst6cks SaiesI IHiKhl Lowl'taS t0 Sec-First N'atl 127 INDUSTRIAL'? Spring Street Los Angeles Prospects of Speedy Ending of Canadian Drought Causes Slump in Quotations By JOHN P. BOUCHAN (Associated Press Market Editor) CHICAGO, June 25. Prospective speedy ending of the Canadian drought and of domestic harvest difficulties southwest had much to do with bringing about downturns of wheat values today. Chances that receipts of new domestic wheat will be largely increased within the next few days acted as an evident weight on the market. Wheat closed nervous, 1 1-8 to 1 3-8c a bushel lower than yesterday's finish.

Corn closed at l-8c decline to l-2o advance, with oats 1-8 1-4 to S-8c off, and provisions varying front 7o decline to a rise of 32c. Setbacks in wheat prices today were in the face of tentative estimates from the United States Department of Agriculture that the 1929 Canadian crop will total only 360,000,000 bushels to 400.000,000 bushels, against 34,000,00 bushels harvested last year. Lowest prices of the day here came after these figures were out, far greater notice being taken of reports of scattered rains In Canada and of a forecast of additional moisture at hand. Meanwhile, favorable weather conditions for maturing and harvesting domestic wheat in the southwest were reported prevalent, together with Indications that arrivals at terminal markets may be decidedly augmented before the end of the week. Emphasizing the outlook for rains In Canada was the relative weakness today of the Winnipeg wfceat market, especially during the lata transactions.

There also was considerable selling of wheat here against simultaneous buying of corn, apparently to close out previous so-called spread trades in which wheat had been bought and corn of equal amount had been sold. Throughout most of the day too, heavy selling of wheat was in progress to realize profits for recent speculative buyers, chiefly east and southwest. Corn prices were irregular, with deferred deliveries showing sirengin. commission houses were actlvsj buyers of December corn. against sales of wheat Favorable crop reports eased the oats market.

Another case of an apparently innocent man be ing sentenced to death for murder has been uncovered In Germany.

Three years ago Emma Hoge of Groenloh, a village near Oana- brueck, was found dead under rather mysterious circumstances. A preliminary autopsy convinced the authorities that she had been murdered. Evidence pointed to Hermann von Diellngen as the murderer. He was arrested Immediately, tried, convicted and sentenced to be executed. Before the sentence was carried out, it was commuted to life im prisonment, a higher court pointing out that there still remained some doubt as to the ejact manner in which the girl met death.

Since then her body has been exhumed and all its various organs microscopically examined. As a result physicians on both sides of the case now fee! certain that her death was entirely due to natural causes. As they have reconstructed the in cldent, she was taken either with a heart attack or a fainting spell as she walked along the lake in which her body was later found, and fell into the water. At the trial it was asserted that Von Diellngen had first killed her and then had thrown the body into the lake. Science Makes New Weapons For Police to Fight Crime MADISOX, June of science as a weapon against criminals has only begun, according to Dr.

J. H. Mathews, University of Wisconsin chemist, whose skill is frequently employed by police. "New methods continually are being devised and used," Dr. Mathews points out, "and many tt these methods are so new that they are not generally known even to those who have responsibility for Investigation of crime.

"This is particularly true of identification of criminals who use firearms. There are only two or three experts in the United States who are familiar with this special technique a technique which gives very positive Identification. "The chemist, pharmacologist, botanist, bacteriologist, pathologist, psychiatrist, psychologist, metallurgist, gun expert, textile expert and finger print expert all are making modern detective methods scientific."
