The school Is held each year during this period, Just prior to the opening of the San Bernardino National forest's high hazard fire season. However, that's not all the 70 forestry department employes division of state forestry workers, and members of the area's fire districts did.

They studied all phases of the fighting of fires from line location and construction to mop-plng-up the dying embers. The school was held under actual emergency conditions, 'the foresters "roughing It" on the camp site. The program opened Tuesday with the workers studying driver training, line location and Thousands to Visit Resorts In tAountains Thousands of Southern California motorists, In the holiday exodui, yesterday began crowding Into San Bernardino mountain resorts for the extended Memorial day week end. On the following day, driver training was continued, supplemented by one-man controlling and suppression of fires, pumper training, Job Instruction training and defining the "rules of the game." The school was climaxed Thursday afternoon by demonstrations by fire crewsv Blazes were set and then turned over to the crews.

A typical scene found them battling with a fire, fanned by winds. They surveyed the situation, then spread out and confined the conflagration by clearing a break around It with axes and shovels. With the blaze restricted and burning out, they put on the finishing touches by mopping It up, with the same shovels and axes. After all crews were well heated and smoked out by the fires, the forest service called It a day and broke camp. Addresses by Norman J.
