By G. A. PHILLIPS NEW YORK, Sept. 16 A faster pace in the national rearmament program added power to the business boom this week. Record-breaking civilian trade combined with the accelerated flow of war goods orders to nudge industrial production close to capacity in some cases and found quick reflection in numerous other phases of the national economy.

CONFUSION, UNREST The stock market hit a new four-year high; retail trade was steady to higher in the final week before credit curbs go into effect in an effort to halt inflationary trends. A fresh spurt in forward buying placed an additional strain on the already shaky price structure and a wide variety of goods was again marked up. The labor picture was one of confusion and unrest as agitation for new wage boosts to meet the steadily rising cost of living mounted on all fronts. Thieves Mistake Deadly Poisonous Insecticide for Oil MODESTO, Sept. 16 UPl-Bur-glars evidently seeking motor oil stole five gallons of a deadly poisonous insecticide from a flying service hangar last night, thinking it was a lubricant.

The insecticide was a new one and represented years of research by the University of California agricultural service and the Shell Chemical said Wayland Fink, operator of the Patterson Flying service. It was the only quantity of the stuff in existence. Theft of the five one-gallon containers, which looked similar to motor oil bottles, was discovered when pilot G. W. Edwards showed up this morning to spray a test plot for the scientists.

The thieves also drained 40 gallons of gasoline from Edwards' plane. Chicago Grain stitution day luncheon of the board Monday noon. Wc must remember that we cannot have freedom in an all-powerful state. The two ideas are mutually exclusive and hateful to one another.

"We especially should remember that the right to own a home is one of the personal freedoms for which many men have laid down their lives. We see this freedom disappearing today in other nations and it is threatened in our own. We believe that we can keep our freedom at home and also fight effectively to win freedom for others," Mr. Peterson added. Koreans me ana said, Me numoer one officer.

The nation's first cautious steps in the rearmament program began to take on meaning in business and industry as many firms received orders to go ahead with production of guns, tanks, planes and other war goods. BIGGEST TRICK The biggest trick in the whole program will be to build up a $30,000,000,000 a year fighting machine without knocking the props from under a bustling civilian economy that had attained a record-breaking pace even before the Korean incident. Some economists believe it can be done without too much of a squeeze, basing their argument on our enormous productive capacity. Others are skeptical. Oranges Bring Higher Prices LOS ANGELES, Sept.

16 (IP)-. The F.O.B. average on Southern California Valencia oranges in- creased another 50 cents a box during the week ending Sept. 16, the California Fruit Growers exchange announced today. Total sales for the week were 100 cars below those of the precious week due to relatively lighter volume of supplies.

The orange administrative committee contemplates a weekly movement of 1,150 cars during the balance of September with a gradual reduction week by week in October and a virtual ship-out of the entire crop by early November. The shipping schedule covers the remaining valencias to move in fresh fruit channels, exclusive of exports. Because of the current strength of the general market, the exchange raised the price on Valencia juice fruit to per ton, an increase of 55 to meet the requirements of 120 pounds of solids per ton. Although sales of California lemons were approximately 25 cars less than last week, the F.O.B. average climbed 50 cents a box.

Demand was about steady for size 360s and smaller. Prorate for the week beginning; Sept. 17 was set at 275 cars. Colion Market NEW YORK. Sept.
