ROGERS It was as far back as 1866 that the first "Evangelical Missionary" arrived in Pembroke from the United States to begin preaching services. Most of those attending were the German-speaking settlers of that area.

By 18S6 a congregation was organized in town and the cornerstone of their first church part of the present one was laid. It's at Miller and Murray Streets, in Pembroke. during the years 1903, 1906, 1919, 1937-38 and in 1950 has resulted in a greatly enlarged structure. In 1956-57, a Christian Education and Fellowship wing was added adjoining the church. inside in 1950, and again the building was remodelled and enlarged.

The entrance steps lead to a wide aisle across the church near the back of the nave. At the other end is an entrance from the large very modern Christian Education building. Back of this cross aisle and divided from the nave by a glass partition Is a section where mothers with young babies that may be fussy can sit for the service and still see, hear and take part in it. One older member dubbed it "the Bawl Room." In 1975 the chancel was redecorated and changes made, among them were new choir pews. Across the back wall of this area are three arches through! which, hanging behind them, soft gold color drapes form a kind of rerados and are illuminated by indirect lighting.

A large memorial oak cross with brass eternity rings is hung in "front of the arches. The whole Is lighted by celling lights on a rheostat control. The organ is a Baldwin Electric with chimes sounding through the tower, played from the organ. It was installed in the mid-1960s. Earlier instruments were a pump type organ, then a Hall-man.

With the earliest preaching service for this congregation held in a hall in 1876, they date their church from that time. After that first meeting they met in homes for a time, then again in a hall over a harness shop until their first church building. This fall they are celebrating their 100th anniversary. The congregation has been known by a number of names in the past. First they were "The Evangelistic Association." In 1922 it becamae "The Evangelical Church" following a merger.

Then in 1946 following another merger the name changed again New mission Gatlneau has been named the site of a new mission endeavor by the Lutheran Church of Canada. Rev. David Elseroad will be missionary to the area, representing the first French language ministry of the and they were "The Evangelical United Brethren Church." Finally in 1968 they joined the United Church of Canada. The congregation chose the present Ministry to The 126 Free Methodist congregations across Canada are being asked to observe a social responsibility the Sunday following Thanksgiving. The Social Issues and Social Action Committee urged that pastors preach at least once a year on the challenge of ministry to social needs.

The United Church of Canada PRESBYTERIAN Missionary speaker Missionary Frances Buckles, who spent 35 years in India, will be guest speaker at Knox United Church Oct 13 at 8.15 p.m. Miss Buckles is secretary of the Mid-India board of examiners for nursing students.
