Selling at one time started to create severe pressure, but at no time did the situation assume alarming proportions. The worst occurred during the second and third hours.

Prices were well down at the close with losses running to around 2 points at the outside. Railroads were under the heaviest selling attention. Steels lower but they managed to com? back at the close." U.S. Steel, for example, closed with a gain of J.g at 37. DEPRESSED GROUPS Depressed groups included motors, oils, utilities, rubbers, air lines, farm implements, chemicals, aircrafts, radio televisions, and many miscellaneous issues.

Coppers ran counter to the general trend and closed higher all around. A leading custom smelter raised its price for domestic copper by 2 cent to 29 cents, thus restoring a cut made early in August. The Associated Press aVerage of 60 stocks declined 60 cents at $107.20. It was down 70 cents on Tuesday. The industrial component declined 70 cents, railroad 80 cents and utilities 20 Trading brought 1,131 individual issues to the tape, more than any time since early in June.

Only 152 gainers remained at the close. Highs for the year numbered 5 and lower climbed to 30 issues. Volume came to 1,400,000 shares. That is slightly below the daily average so far this year, but it is greatest since TTune 10. Tuesday's total was 1,030,000 shares.
