317 West Street. Cert Waft Mv raw hi I -r. ff Bureau Benefits Told in Detail (Continued from Page 21) tion guides, parking stickers, a key to the city, registration bureaus, and gift souvenirs or typical local products can be provided to help the convention organization save funds. With extremely limited funds in the past, the San Bernardino Chamber has been able to provide only name badges and registration help. The City has supplied a key to the city and parking stickers.

Is it worth it? The 300-plus per cent return to the City of Long Beach gives some indication. ALL BENEFIT' "All businesses in town," Chairman Goodcell declared, "Directly or indirectly benefit by conventions." Analysis of convention spending. based- upon surveys, shows the delegate's dollar divided up as follows Hotels, 39.15 cents; retail stores, 19.97 cents; restaurants outside hotel, 13.42 cents; beverages, 6-67 cents; night clubs, 6.36 cents; local transportation, 3.24 cents; car, oil and gasoline service, 2.11 cents; theater, 1.58 cents; sight-seeing 06 cents, and miscellaneous ex penses, 6.44 cents. And according to the International Association of Convention Bu reaus, the average delegate spends $27.50 a day. Convention steering committee members -view tht breakdown of the delegate's dollar as only the beginning.

Other benefits show up in extra help hired, extra income for service help, and even the in come to the City in sales tax col lections on delegates' purchases. ine money turns over many times after it once gets into the City. After study of San Bernardino's needs and capacities, Goodcell said, his committee estimated that setting up a Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitors Bu reau and operating it through its first year would cost FULL-TIME MAN To operate such a bureau, it is anticipated, will require a man who will spend his full time procuring conventions. He will start by local contacts with organiza tions which hold conventions, then proceed on to district and state officials. Much of his time will be spent out of the City.

Work which has culminated in the present stage of plans for San Bernardino's forthcoming Conven tion and Visitors Bureau has been the work of a committee appointed early in the year by Chamber President Milton R. Sage. Serving on the group with Chair man Goodcell have been Max H. Green, Lloyd Bostwick, Jack Walsh, Q. B.

Kerr, James Lauer, Milton Pate, Jack Skadron, David Snookal and Arthur W. Presidential Quiz: By HAROLD T. CURLEY DO YOU KNOW? 1. When did the symbols of the Republican elephant and the Demo cratic donkey make their-first appearance? ANSWERS: 1 Thomas Nast, the father of po litical cartooning, created the Republican elephant, the Democratic donkey and the Tammany tiger. In 1874, in Harper's Weekly, the symbol of the elephant was applied to the Republican Party because of the clumsiness with which they handled themselves.

The donkey and elephant were first placed together in one cartoon during the presidential campaign of 1880. 2. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President, was born at 28 E. 20th New York, on Oct. 27, 1858.

He was nicknamed the Happy Warrior by Bradley Gilman, in allusion to the heroic figure of William Wordsworth's poem entitled The Character of The Happy, Warrior, in which the happy warrior is set forth as a valiant soldier. Franklin D. Roosevelt borrowed the phrase and applied it to "Al" Smith during the Democratic Convention at Houston, on June 26, 1928. TOMORROW: What President was nicknamed the First Dark Horse?
