The critical fuel situation was disclosed at a meeting yesterday attended by officials of west coast oil companies and members of the Army-Navy petroleum board.

Officials brought out these facts: 1. The Navy will be about 50 per cent short of its requirements for gasoline, oil, lubricating oil and similar products by July 1. The Navy needs nearly 500,000 more barrels of aviation gasoline and 60 per cent more Diesel oil. 2. The Army also Is about 50 per cent short.

An Army Air forces representative told the board that the A.A.F. would, need 2,513,600 barrels of 100 to 300 octane gasoline in the 1948 fiscal year. Only one-fourth of this amount has been committed. MAY MEET NEEDS 3. Another Army board member said he "hoped" bids to be opened June 10 would meet requirements for the Army ground forces.

The board made no direct threats to curtail civilian consumption. It left no doubt, however, that arbitrary action might be taken If the oil companies do not cooperate. "We certainly hope It won't become a national emergency so we'll have to go out and requisition," one board member said.
