Will Jim Powers Lost to U.S.C. for Season With Chipped Hip Bone Kerkorian, Monachino Resume Duel REDONDO BEACH UP) When California and Stanford hook up in their traditional grid-Iron game Saturday, two top ballcarriers will renew a strange personal rivalry that began in high school three years ago. Quarterback Gary Kerkorian, Stanford sophomore, played for Inglewood High school in 1946.

That same year, California's Jim Monachino, the Pacific Coast's leading scorer, performed for Redondo, Inglewood's foremost foe. In the big game, undefeated Redondo tallied when Monachino caught a pass in the end zone. A Kerkorian pass gave Inglewood Its only touchdown. Kerkorian held the ball as a teammate kicked the extra point. But Monachino's try for the conversion was blocked, and Inglewood won the game, 7 to 6.

Monachino and Kerkorian played the same positions then as they do today. And Monachino's coach at Redondo was Harold Grant, now freshman coach at California. Racing Ends NEW YORK (IP) A crowd of 27,064 railbirds turned out at Jamaica yesterday for the final program of the 1949 New York racing season and thrilled to a bril liant victory by King Ranch's Flying Missel in the $20,000 Dainger- field handicap.

Waiting until the final turn, rlying Missel showed amazing stamina as he charged over a gruelling two-and-a-sixteenth miles in a new track record time of 3:32 45. It was three-fifths of a second faster than the best previous clocking, turned in by Eurasian in the 1945 renewal of the Daingerfield. First Nighter gained the run ner-up spot, a length-and-a-half back, while Blue Hills earned third place through a disqualification. Natural finished third but was disqualified to last place for interfering with Blue Hills. TANFORAN ENTRIES (By United Press) Wednesday, 16.

5 Position NEW YORKLD- Notre Dame, Oklahoma, California and Army continue to be the only "regulars" in college football's first 10. The weekly Associated Press poll is out today and this fearsome foursome is at the top again the only teams that have ranked every week of the season. For the first time in weeks, though, there's a change even in their order witli Oklahoma and California moving ahead of Army, which lost the grip it has held on second place since Oct. 10. The Fighting Irish's first half scars against North Carolina apparently didn't weaken their position.

On the strength of their final 42-6 victory over the Tarheels, Coach Frank Leahy's men were first on 140 of the 162 ballots submitted by sports writers and sport-casters across the nation. Other members of the "big four" Oklahoma, California and Army which have been dominating the poll all season underwent a shake-up. Because of its 14-13 squeaker against Pennsylvania, unbeaten Army fell from second to fourth and received only one first place vote. SOONERS UNBEATEN Oklahoma's perfect-record Soon-ers, 27-7 conquerors of Missouri, replaced Army as the No. 2 team, drawing 15 firsts.

California also slid past Army into the No. 3 spot with five firsts after a 41-14 victory over Oregon. The other first place vote went to ninth-place Virginia. Michigan, Rice, Ohio State, Minnesota, Virginia and Southern Methodist follow the "Big Four" in that order. Ohio, moving up to seventh from eleventh, and Southern Methodist, advancing to tenth from twelfth, are the newcomers, replacing Cornell and Michigan State.

Cornell's all-winning march was ended by Dartmouth, 16-7. As a result the Big Red tumbled from seventh to 17 in the standings. Michigan State apparently played itself out against Notre Dame a week ago and lost to Oregon State, 25-20, on the west coast. The total vote with points fioured on basis (first place votes in parentheses). 1.

Bucks, Michigan Are Statistics Leaders CHICAGO (IP) The Ohio State at Michigan football game Saturday, which will decide the Big Ten championship, will match the league's best offensive team against the best defensive club, statistics showed. The Buckeyes were the best offensive squad in the circuit, averaging 24.2 points per game with an average gain of 351 yards per contest. In addition its average gain of 163.2 yards per game was tops for passing attacks.

SLANTS By CLAUDE ANDERSON 8porU Editor A couple of weeks ago, when speaking to the San Bernardino ericiiron club, Redlands coach Ralph Weaver proved he not only was a topflight mentor but an A-1 prognosticator. He told the club that Chaffey High would beat Redlands by 30 points, and when the shouting had died that night the margin was some 31 points (37-6). He figured the Tigers rate that much edge on paper, but he was going to see that his boys could keep it much closer. They did, for the whole first half, but Terrier fumbles and the power and speed of the Tigers told in the final half, and Chaffey pounded over four scores and a field goal. Similarly, against Chaffey the Cards played their best ball of the season, despite falling by a 30-6 count.

Getting back to Weaver, we queried him Monday on the outcome of tomorrow's S.B.H.S.-Red-lands tussle, knowing his prediction powers. To our amazement and he said it was for publication he tabbed San Bernardino by a 20-7 score. Whether or not it was to be used to get his boys fired up, we don't know, but at any rate it doesn't seem that a team that has won 6 of 7 should rate underdogs to a four-times beaten Cardinal club. This may be one of the top elevens in Redlands history, and certainly it is the classiest one in many years. Although a week's postponement took some of the edge off, it should turn out to be a whale of a ball game.

On the weekly crystal gazing, we picked up a slight change in the S.B.H.S.-Redlands odds what with three Card backs ready to go again. It's now going to be a 13-13 tie; (2) Big Bear to nip St. Bernardine's tonight, 13-6: (3) Valley college to give Santa Ana more trouble than expected, 2Q'7; (4) Chaffey High over Ventura, 33-13, Saturday; (5) Whittier to edge the U. of 21-7; (6) Ful-lerton J. C.

over Riverside, 19-13; (7) Chaffey college to shade Orange Coast, 21-13; (8) U.C.L.A. to upset S. 21-14, and (9) ditto Stanford over Cal, 20-14; (10) Michigan to nose out Ohio State, 27-21. SHORT SLANTS The weekly San Bernardino Gridiron club breakfast meeting will be Friday morning at 7, president Bill Allen disclosed last night, with Bob Lewis in charge of the program. It was hoped to have members of the Michigan State eleven, currently staying at Arrowhead Springs hotel, as guests, but the Spartans depart Thursday for Phoenix.

Hopes of a repeat win for S.B.II.S. in the C.B.L. cross country meet next Wednesday at Redlands took a jolt when two of the stars from last year's team were lost. Coach Vic Hodge will miss Robert Resendez and AI 1 locker, the latter wishing to try his mettle in basketball. Hodge rates his five hopefuls, in order, as Richard Resendez, Richard Bea-man, Ronald Wood, Daniel Cas-truila and Trino Mejia.

The school with the first five across wins. Guy Daniels, Redlands sports publicity director, is singing the praises of the U. of R. fullback star Bill Stewart and not without reason. Stewart tops the conference in average gains (6.39), with 511 yards in 80 carries.

He's second in loop punting (41.9) and scoring (48 points), and Is top man in receiving Larry LaFond's passes. The 5-10, 190-pounder from Kamahameha school in Honolulu has a strong chance for Little All-America mention, and if so, would be the first since Ted Runner and Stan Flowers did so two years ago. Runner is now at Chaffey High, where he's helping Truck Lindsey mould a Southern C.I.F. champion eleven at Ontario. Cravath said Powers hurt the hip in the Stanford game Nov. 5 but the extent of the injury wasn't discovered until yesterday. The loss of Powers hurts U.S.C.'s chances considerably in Saturday's annual Grudge game with the U.C.L.A. Bruins. Cravath has only one quarterback left on the roster sophomore Dean Schneider, a fourth stringer who hasn't played this year.

Frank Gifford, the No. 2 signal caller, is recovering from an appendectomy. Wilbur Robertson, the No. 3 man, has a broken jaw. Cravath said he may also have to use Don Burns, a junior varsity player, against the Bruins.

JOHNSON RETURNS LOS ANGELES UP) The U.C. L.A. Bruins' chances against Southern California Saturday soared considerably with the hospitalization of U.S.C. quarterback Jim Powers and the recovery of U.C.L.A. tailback Ernie Johnson.

Johnson ran through contact work and coach Henry (Red) Sanders expects him to start against the Trojans. Sanders ran the Bruins through defensive scrimmage and worked on his passing attack. His main worry, he said, is getting his single wing reverses around U.S.C. 's big ends. CELERI WORKS OUT BERKELEY UP) The California Bears got a look at Stanford plays as they worked out in Weatherman Tabs Rain for Bears, Indian 'Big Game' SAN FRANCISCO (P) The weatherman went out on a limb yesterday on the Stanford-Cal football game.

He predicted rain for Saturday. The weather bureau wasn't emphatic about such a long-range forecast, but said indications point to occasional rain over the week end. Meanwhile, Stanford freshmen set some kind of a new record for intercepting pre-game raiders from California. In City bowling, Jack Rush set a season high with a 630 series and 287 game. He picked up a 4-6-10 split in getting 11 strikes in a row. Bugs Lowell rolled a 644 and Fritz Bittke a 611 for other top efforts last week. RYE not bourbon JAMAICA RESULTS FIRST S3.000. Claiming.
