B6 ShrVhncourcrSim ENTERTAINMENT Linda Ronsfadf booked in death coliseum TELEVISION with PETER WILSON AMES IN THE IMEWS Tricia Reay, who would much rather skip the honor, thank you: Tricia, of Sutton Coldfield, England, started sneezing last November. And to the bafflement of doctors who have tried everything, she hasn't stopped. Says her mother, in a classic understatement, "Life fof a girl who cannot stop sneezing can be difficult." The current record is 155 days, mightily sneezed by a girl in Miami, Fla. Singer Linda Ronstadt has been booked (or a March 25 concert at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum the first major pop music concert there since a Dec. 3 appearance by The Who resulted in 11 deaths in a crowd stampede outside the coliseum.

"I think the city wants concerts, certainly Electric Factory does and the fans do," said Thomas Gould, a lawyer for the Ronstadt concert's promoter, Electric Factory Concerts of Philadelphia. "Now it's a question of slowly working our way back into the business, and that's what we're looking at with this next concert. We've had some problems with groups that wouldn't come in, partly due to the uncertainty of what was happening in Cincinnati." Electric Factory was the promoter of Tf.e Who concert and of three planned concerts that were cancelled following the Lecember incident. Gould said Electric Factory would be willing to abide by new regulations regarding crowd control, admission and festival or general admission seating. acording to the people at Nielsen.

More than 3.1 million people watched the game. This was closely followed by Three's Company with three million viewers. Both of these shows were on the CBC. The rest of the top 10 shows on the CBC and CTV were: MASH, Hockey Night in Canada, American Music Awards, Vegas, Happy Days, Power Parts I and II, Diff'rent Strokes and Quincy. Over on the miniature Global Network the top five programs were: Win-tario (the lottery), Loveboat, Some Mothers Do, 69 Minutes and Charlie's Angels.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if all the independ-. ent stations that run shows like Love-boat and Charlie's Angels were taken together and considered as a network. I'd be willing to bet the top 10 might change around quite a bit. y-v: iWiif Vf i i. A V- i I It's heap bad medicine for Tocto these days.

Main complaint seems to be that I referred to the show as being childish and aimed at children. Sorry, folks, but that's the way it is. The 7 p.m. time slot on Sundays in the U.S. is reserved for kidvid or current affairs programming.

If ABC wishes to continue to program Galactica in this slot (and judging by the poor ratings that idea is out as of this week) it has to convince the Federal Communications Commission that the show is designed for children, As the reviewer in Variety (the movie and television trade paper) said recently: "Resultant adventures were simple-minded enough to appeal to the moppet audience. Truman, celebrates her 95th birthday Wednesday. She'll spent a quiet day at her Independence, home with friends. An interesting contrast. When I was in Los Angeles last month Roone Arledge, head of ABC Sports, was talking about the kind of coverage he would be providing for the American people from the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

Arledge, an expert in these things who made a large part of his reputation as the man in the ABC control booth at the Olympics, said that he would do a little bit of everything but would not show entire hockey games because the U.S. public wouldn't want to watch. Not all the way through. On the other hand, CTV (our very own Olympic network this time around) knows exactly what the Canadian public wants. Did we not have a top 10 of Canadian-produced shows in 1979 with nine hockey games and one political debate listed? Therefore there will be hockey coming out of your ears on CTV but very little of it will be Canadian unless CTV can convince ABC to allow it to run more Canadian games.

As the cameras are under control of the American network, the live and full-length hockey games on CTV in the preliminary rounds were scheduled to be between the U.S. and other clubs. However, today CTV announced it would be running the Canada vs. Holland game at 5:30 p.m., instead of the originally scheduled game. CTV is working hard on getting more Canadian games into the schedule.

The one certain game other than tonight's will be shown next Saturday night at 5:30 when Canada plays Finland. This takes place at the same time as the CBC is showing a Vancouver Canucks-Washington Capitals game so the choice is yours. If CTV is unsuccessful in changing ABC's mind, fans will just have to wait until the finals or until the U.S. plays Canada (and because the teams are in two separate groups this is unlikely) to cheer the Canadian national team on. Coverage gets underway on CTV on the evening before the official opening.

That's tonight at 5:30 with the already-mentioned game between Canada and HoDand. This would have been an excellent placement in Eastern Canada to fight off the attack of The, Exorcist on CBS but won't work here because of the time differental. Meanwhile ABC, which expects to clean up in the February ratings sweeps with its Olympic coverage, will come on the air at 9:30 with profiles of athletes and coverage of downhill sking practices and highlights of the aforementioned U.S.-Sweden hockey match. For opening ceremony buffs even the CBC will be getting into-the act on Wednesday with coverage beginning at 11:30 a.m. The ABC cameras will capture the excitement of the athletes parading around in their official cos-tumjs beginning at 11 a.m.

and CTV will pick up the feed at the same time. If you want the rest of the two-weeks of coverage watch the sports listings in the TV section of the Leisure magazine and the daily highlights. I-The NATIONAL FILM Cindy wins Vadim's heart and Vancouver Planetarium present a special free public film showing of NORTH CHINA COMMUNE One of the most revealing films ever made about China's "New Centennial Auditorium, Vancouver Planetarium, Friday, February 15 p.m. By BOB THOMAS LOS ANGELES Roger Vadim's latest discovery is an Oklahoma-born, Texas-raised soap opera actress named Cindy Pickett. She follows a distinguished tradition.

Other Vadim protegees: Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, Annette Stroyterg, Jane Fonda. All but Miss Deneuve he married. Vadim, who introduced a new sexuality to the screen as a member of France's New Wave of the 1950s, is bringing 'out his first film in three years, Night Games. Cindy Pickett stars as a Beverly Hills wife whose sexual repression is played out in nightly fantasies. Avco-Embassy is releasing the film, which was filmed mostly in Manila for Raymond Chow's Hong Kong-based company.

Cindy Pickett came to town on terminal leave from BCTV'8 co-production, with Hannali-Barbera, of the B.B. Beegle Show got a showing in New York last month on WNEW-TV. The pilot program was reviewed in Variety where the main thrust of the criticisms was directed towards the program's obvious debt to the concept of the Muppet Show. Said the reviewer: "It's one thing to admire another show, but it would seem that H-B and its Canadian production partners (CTV and British Columbia Television) carried it to the point of a near doppleganger. Too many of the show's elements seemed simple ripoffs of those in the Muppets." Yes, but what kind of audience did it get? (16mm colour, sound CBS's The Guiding Light, in which she has appeared for three years.

"It was time to move on," she explained, although she was grateful for the schooling in "the closest thing to live television." She and Vadim joined an interview. There seems to be no romance, but a mutual respect between them; like Jane Fonda, even during their marriage, Miss Pickett refers to him as "Vadim." He calls her the most promising actress he has worked with. "It all started when I was about to leave for Bermuda on a vacation from Guiding Light," she recalled. "My agent told me Roger Vadim was looking for a new star and suggested I try out for him. So I stayed in town." Pickett wasn't certain she made an impression on the Frenchman, but she was called from Bermuda for a screen test.

She ended up testing five times, including one three-day session in an apartment house. Vadim explained: "I prefer making tests away from a studio, using a small crew and 16 mm, so I can take my time and not worry about the expense." The director shot a week of exteriors here, but the major portion will be filmed in Manila. The reason was pure economics. With a six-day work week (instead of five here) and lower costs, Vadim figured his 7-week shoot in Manila equalled 10 or 11 weeks here. Night Games is necessarily erotic, Vadim remarked, "but it is not vulgar at all; when you go too far, it becomes unpleasant for the audience." fell Although Hollywood Squares has disappeared from Vancouver screens, interest is still high. People constantly ask me if it will ever be back. Right now the big story with that show is that Paul Lynde has been lured (more money) into returning to the program for the rest of this year and all of next. The ratings went down, down, down when Lynde left the show in the fall of 1979 and the producers were frightened it would disappear altogether if they didn't get him under contract quick. Feb.
