rp'Trjinmniiin li B4 THE RECORD, FRIOAY, JANUARY 28, 1979 SfHrifN'MSMieHUrlMN CnifNTIfS NFW Four TV shows debut tonight CONVERTIBLES FROM PAGE HI CBS and NBC moke Friday a night for comedy lovers 'New Jersey's network's fact sheet notes, It is run by a lily-white gentleman who wears a white suit, white tie, white hat, and is chauf-fered around in a white convertible, He devours raw liver for breakfast. A simpleton sheriff helps him run the corrupt community, They get their rake-offs on ''portable prostitution slot machines, and other vices. largest Selettion Of COHVtRllBli SOfABlDS and SOFASl In a new CBS series "In the Beginning," which didn't get very far. It was canceled after four episodes. In that show, he portrayed a priest.

Now, he plays Larry Adler, a radio talk show host who amuses himself with zany antics in the studio. He's also about to be divorced and has custody of two young daughters. It is not lopsided comedy, but rather warm and human, a pair of overworked adjectives in television. In this instance, however, they give every hope of being true. 9 p.m., SAT. 1 1 t.m. 6 p.m. FLOOR SAMPLE SALE In the premiere, the three people on the verge of instant wealth are Herschel Bcrnardi as a destitute and desperate bookie who gets his lottery ticket when he recovers an elderly woman's purse from a thief, Adrienne Barbeau as a young lady who can't find herself and is romantically pursued by a trustee of her inheritance (Bcrnie Koppel), who buys a lottery ticket with her buck, and a young lawyer being asked to run for public office who Is given the ticket by his campaign manager to prove he's a winner. The bookie loses The show takes the viewer through some of the desperation that builds to the night of the drawing, and follows two of them-the winner and just one of the losers-to a happy conclusion.

The bookie loses out; he is last seen dashing from the theater with two hoods in hot pursuit. CBS's new entry tonight at 9 is "Dukes of Hazzard," an updated "Beverly Hillbillies," to which the producers have, added a lot of jiggles and a liberal sprinkling of the low humor characteristic of such Burt Reynolds pictures as "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Gator." Hazzard is a mythical county, "south of Ohio and east of Mississippi," as the Jiggle and yells Their hog-jowled adversaries are the Duke family-Grandpa, and nephews Bo and Luke (Denver Pyle is grandpa, Tom Wopat is Luke, and John Schneider is Bo) and their Daisy Mae-type cousin (Catherine Bach), who is the ultimate example of jiggles in this premiere episode. There are a lot of screeching tires, stunt-car driving, and a lot of "ya-hooing." Waylon Jennings, a top country-music star, wrote the theme song and narrates each week. The dialogue is so thick with southern drawling, English subtitles almost seem appropriate. After the opening chase sequence, the nephews ask the runaway driver, "Why did you steal the sheriff's car?" He responds, "Why, he impounded my car.

Seems only fair (that I took his)." Somewhere along the line, the opening episode has a plot. Seems the boys hijack the sheriff's slot machines and use them to raise money to save an orphanage. our already Low Prices on Regulars 1 Leathers Suedes Wools Rabblti Raincoats Ski Jacketi SIZES 5-15 ston (delightfully portrayed by John Schuck and Sharon Cless), who find the routines of their jobs dull, despite their supposed glamour. He's a sportswrlter, she's an executive with a top cosmetics firm. Innocently, each wishes he or she could become the other to give a new adventure to their lives, and astonishingly they wake up the next morning to discover their bodies have been switched.

Unique situations The predicaments are laugh-provoking, and of course unique. They have to dress in each other's clothes, swap Jobs, keep alert to the mannerisms of the opposite sex. For instance, Sam-now with the outward appearance of his wife-must learn to walk in high heels, not to smoke his cigar in public, and to face the awkwardness of being expected to go into women's rest rooms. And what could he-she possibly know about lipstick? Penny must learn sports in greater depth, face the horrible prospect of interviewing a sports celebrity in a steam room, and belly up to the bar with the guys. The turnaround roles are skillfully handled by the stars, despite the added task of learning the nuances of the opposite sex.

There is a marvelous instant when Sam, now with long hair, leans and rolls back his head to let the hair fall away when he lifts the telephone, a routine feminine action. There is also a marvelously funny, and perceptively acted scene in a restaurant when the couple, double-dating with their unknowing neighbor-friends, get into a squabble. As Penny, in Sam's body, reacts with feminine emotion, even to lifting a handkerchief and sobbing, both the friends, and the other diners are dumbfounded. A second opportunity The comedy presents unlimited possibilities for future story lines, among them, the stars reported during recent interviews, the prospect of pregnancy. It is the kind of show that makes one wish for its success.

A half-hour after "Turnabout," the network offers McLean Stevenson in "Hello, Larry," his second chance at series success this season. Stevenson, who gained fame as Col. Henry Blake in "M'A'S'H," starred earlier this season DAILY UNADVERTISED SPECIALS 3TCV.IML i mm Retail '45 SKI JACKETS (Regulars) Music for children The flip side "Hello, Larry" is, In effect, the other side of the successful CBS comedy series "One Day At A Time," which views the same problems from a woman's vantage. Stevenson, as Larry Adler, must cope with an older daughter whose boyfriend threatens to end their relationship unless they "go all the way." Adler's job as a loony radio talk-show host is central to the show. He's not quite as outrageous as Imus used to be on New York radio, but he's close, if less nasty.

In the opening episode, after giving liberal advice to a young girl caller, he suddenly realizes the girl was his 16-year-old daughter. Able supporting cast Donna Wilkes plays the 16 year old, and Kim Richards the younger girl. They are suitable support, as are the characters at the radio station: Joanna Gleason as the ambitious producer and George Memmoli as the blubbery, comical engineer. The string of intelligent shows is broken at 10 to 11, when NBC offers "Sweepstakes," an unsophisticated anthology meant to portray comedy and drama against the setting of lottery winners and losers. The show's only regular is Edd Byrnes, who gained a reputation years ago as "Kookie," the parking lot attendant in "77 Sunset Strip." Little had been heard from him until he landed a minor role as a disc jockey in "Grease." Now he has another minor role, as the master of ceremonies at the weekly lottery drawings.
