Sportpourri: UA probe An Arizona Supreme Court justice in Tucson has ordered that the University of Arizona release documents from its investigation into an athletic-department slush fund. Justice Michael J. Brown said the documents fell within the provisions of Arizona's public-records law and had to be made public within 10 days.

The slush fund's existence was diclosed last May during court testimony by former Arizona football coach Tony Mason. The fund allegedly was administered by a booster-club officer, who dispersed cash to coaches and administrators in the university's athletic department from 1971 to 1977. "I could have gotten a bigger and better contract, possibly by becoming a free agent, but I wanted to stay in this city for a lot of reasons." As for the size of the contract, Schmidt said: "I don't think the reality has sunk in yet." Schmidt has a career batting average of only .263 but is the team's all-time home run leader, with 314. He hit a career high .316 last year and led the league in six offensive categories.

600-meter relay 3:34.38, West Germany, Dortmund. West Germany, Jan. 30. National Hockey League Patrick Division The Associated Press It was one of those games you could play and play again. In fact, that's what the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Bradley Braves did last night.

When it was over, Cincinnati had beaten Bradley, 75-73, in seven nerve-racking overtimes to set a Division I college basketball record. "We just couldn't get a break," Bradley coach Dick Versace said after watching Doug Schloemer's 15-foot shot drop in for Cincinnati with one second left in the sev-" enth overtime. "They got lucky we didn't. Our guys played so hard, you can't really fault them." Neither team had scored in the final overtime frame prior to Schloemer's winning basket. Bradley's center, Kerry Cooks, launched an 18-footer after a long inbounds pass, but the shot bounced off the back of the rim, ending the 3-hour, 15- minute marathon.

The old Division I record of six overtimes was held by two games, one in 1955, when Minnesota beat Purdue, 59-56, and the other in 1953, when Niagara beat Siena, 88-8. In games involving the nation's ranked teams, No. 4 Virginia routed Brigham Young-Hawaii, 118-84; Kansas State upset No. 5 Minnesota, 62-52; No. 9 Missouri walloped Youngstown State, 97-60; and No.

12 Alabama trimmed Biscayne, 94-63. Elsewhere, Colorado beat Idaho State, 58-52, in a first-round game of the Rebel Roundup tournament. Nevada-Las Vegas posted a 66-59 victory over Stetson in the other first-round game. Nevada-Reno beat Loyola Marymount, 93-85, in the first round of the Wolf Pack Classic. St.

Mary's held off North Texas State for an 88-86 victory in the other opening-round game.
