Yoder The Record Trenton Bureau What do you do if you're a politician with a name that few people pronounce properly? If you're Thomas Kean, the former Assembly leader who is running for the Republican nomination for governor, you advertise on the radio to let people know that your name is pronounced not "Kean; K-E-A-N," the radio announcer says in a series of one-minute commercials on eight New York City, New Jersey, and Philadelphia stations. The announcer properly promounces Kean's name and then spells it out four or five times in each commercial.

"How do you spell relief?" a radio announcer asks an imaginary man in the street during the commercial. The answer: "Kean; K-E-A-N. He raised Cain over Byrne's tax as Republican leader in the Assembly and now we want to raise Kean to governor." The advertising, which comes more than three months before the June primary, is considered unusual because it is so early. A spokesman for Kean said yesterday that the advertising, prepared by the Washington, D.C., public relations firm of Bailey, Deardourff Eyre is designed to overcome a key problem early in the campaign. "The first thing we want to do is to get Kean's name recognized," the spokesman said.

"We want people to get it Rys bows out, denying GOP pressure to quit Assemblyman C. Gus Rys of Fair Lawn, R-Ber-gen, one of the quieter members of the state legislature, has decided not to seek another term. Several Republican sources said that Rys was pressured to step aside by members of his party who want a younger person who's more of an activist. Rys denied he had been asked to retire. "I've spent 20 years in government," Rys, 61, a former Fair Lawn mayor said.

"I think it's good to have somebody else come in." He described the legislature as a circus. "And every few years we've had a primary where I've had to spend a lot of money and get people to work for me," he said. Since 1972, Rys has represented District 40, which covers most of west Bergen. The district's other assemblyman, John Spizziri, plans to seek reelection. Rys's withdrawal will spark still another battle between the two factions of the county Republican organization.

One faction is headed by county chairman Richard Vandcr Plaat and the other by former chairman Anthony J. Statile. Elmwood Park Mayor Richard Mola has announced his intention to seek an Assembly nomination. He is backed by Statile. Vander Plaat, whose support is based in the west Bergen area, supports Oakland councilman Carey Edwards for the nomination.

Two other possible candidates are Marge Rouke-ma of Ridgewood and Nicolas Felice of Fair Lawn, who reportedly are interested in running. West Bergen is the most solidly Republican area of the county. Bergen legal aid wins 9-month grant Bergen County Legal Services has received a $104,000 grant from the' Legal Services Corp. in Washington. The nine-month grant, which will enable the organization to continue to provide civil legal aid to the poor, provides a large portion of the group's total annual budget of about $240,000.
