Yesterday was the time when Norman Jewison, Arthur Hiller and Harvey Hart graduated from CBC-TV in Toronto and boosted the Canadian film contingent in Hollywood. Today is movie-making with bare hands if necessary. Canadian film hopefuls, who once had no choice but follow forefather Mack Scnnett'i trail to carve careers under California klieglights, now are staying home in large numbers to put slices of life on the screen with enthusiastic cameras and nouveau cinema honesty. Most of them will be in Toronto all next week for the 1972 Canadian Film Awards, a solid five days of Canadian films before an international panel of judges picks the best films in 13 different categories and the Etrog Canada's equivalent of Hollywood's Oscar is presented in a gala ceremony.

Last year presentation of awards was fouled up because it came after an extensive cocktail party and much fluid consumption during dinner. This year the awards will take precedence over drinking, dining and dancing, these three pastimes scheduled to start only after the last Estrog has been accepted by winning film-makers. THE PLYWOOD PEOPLE WINDSOR It began In the mountains of Japan the northern and southern arc of Honshu. Here, from the Gulf ot Mutsu to the Hida Plateau, Nissan engineers over the last year tested a new series of automobiles. The Datsun designers didn't hava to coma up with a new car, but if they did, it would have to be good; good enough to match other Datsuns, that havt turned in championship per formance from Kenya to Lime Rock, If these experimental models didn't make It, they'd never get out of the Honshu mountains.

But they did make It They met and surpassed all of the tests. And last month, the first cars in the Datsun 610 aeries arrived in Canada: A four-door sedan, a two-door hardtop, and a four-door station wagon. For two weeks, there wera only five 610s in the country, and Vancouver photographer John Powell had three of them. The first thing you'll notice about the 610 Is Its silhouette: Long hood, rakish back, sporty shorty deck. It lies long and low and clings to the ground.

Meanwhile, there's more all-round space: an extra 3.1 inches on the wheelbase, 1.1 inches in width, up to 57 inches in length. Automatic transmission and short-throw four-on-the-floer, 105 HP, front disc brakes, fully Independent suspension. Literally dozens of unusual and luxurious features, as standard equipment on all three 610 models. Many of them are features associated with the most expensive automobiles. There now are 62 in the final competition. Eighteen qualified for public screenings but only out of competition.

Thirty-five were rejected. Seeing what's left will mean four days of 9 a.m. to midnight viewing for judges who aren't going to get rich from the experience. That I know because I'm one of them, beginning a three-year term, which means a week in Toronto per annum, which in itself proves you have to be a glutton for punishment to accept such an ordeal. Gerald Pratley, Canada's best-known critic, is jury chairman, without a vote in deciding prizes.

Jean-Pierre Tadros of Montreal is a judge for the last time this year. Other jurors include Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray; Yugoslavian film Dusan Makavejev (Mysteries of the Organism and Loves of a Switchboard Operator); and a still unannounced European director. Quebec is back in the Canadian Film Awards, giving full support after a much-disputed absence. AT THE MOVIES Claude Godbout, head of that province's Film Producers Association, is co-chairman with Toronto's Robert Crone. The Quebec resurgence already has made an impact.
