11 so that the city of Huntington Beach may obtain title to its tidelands. Let mo say at the outset that I am opposed to the desecration of any stretch of beach which may be utilized for recreational development but I am Just as strongly opposed to permitting a major oil company to drain millions of dollars from beneath this beach at the expense of the people of the state. A major oil company, through its drilling operations, has completely unfitted the Huntington Beach, shore line for recreational development. This company has taken about $7,000,000 in oil and gas from beneath the beach, without paying one dollar royalty to either city or state. The beaches of the state should belong to the people and the citizens of Huntington Beach should be given title to their tidelands so that they may supervise activities there and participate in any profits to be derived instead of permitting a major oil company to pocket the entire proceeds.
