Ok Botqca County Wcw aWrwy D-6 THE RECORD, WEDNESDAY, JULY SI, 1974 SPORTS .1 Moonachie tops Ridgefield Herlihy pitches one River Dell looks better tins year in Mack tourney if L. r- k. (I i I it- t-i Vkl A SEC-RUN, third-inning rally carried Hackensack past Clarkstown, 10-6. Joe Pistono and Pete Cafone each had a two-run single in the big inning while Bob Meli singled home a run and the sixth scored on a bases-loaded walk Ron Herlihy pitched a one-hitter and struck out 18 batters last night to lead Moonachie to a 4-0 victory over Ridgefield in the Metropolitan Baseball League. Rich Tucci's infield hit in the fourth inning deprived the righthander of a no-hitter.

Ironically, Tucci had appeared to ground out on the previous pitch, but the ball was ruled to have bounced foul before the play was made. The Braves got two runs in the first on Joe Mirabella's double, a walk, an error, and a double steal. Ernie Windfuhr stole home on the front end of the double steal. They added an unearned run in the second and Bob Van Saders singled home another in the fifth. EMERSON-VVESTVYOOD moved closer to the Northern school season to hit .400 and knock in a team-high 33 runs.

"Donnie's never had a bad outing in any of the tournament games he's ever pitched," says Holbrook. "He pitched the decisive game in tournaments and always gave a good showing. "You have to be deep enough to start with and, if you make some strategic pickups, you can win," says Holbrook. So River Dell added pitchers John Marchese of Westwood (3-3. 2.74 ERA.

.347 BA) and Tom Waddell of Closter (6 3, 1.88) and all-County shortstop Kurt Peters of Midland Park, who played for Ho-Ho-Kus Connie Mack. Marchese will play first base as well. Third baseman Jack Lazor-ko (.453. 23 RBI) and outfielders Doug Tornese (.371) and John Tracy (.352, 31 RBI) form a solid hitting nucleus with Schmonsees and Peters. Lazorko, Tornese and Tracy started all three years as did pitchers Tom Lang (7-0, 0.56 ERA, 78 strikeouts in 50 innings), Bill Dittman (3-1, L29), and Jon Gleason (3-0).

River Dell's Connie Mack team begins tomorrow to defend its North Atlantic Regional title at Waltham, Mass. It marks the third straight year that a River Dell team has advanced to regional play under the direction of Jeff Holbrook. In 1972, the River Dell Mickey Mantle team finished 29-5 and runnerup to Cincinnati for the national championship in Danville, while last year's Connie Mack team was 28-5 and second to Long Beach, Calif, in Farmington, N.M. "This year, we have more kids who can play more positions than on the past teams," says Holbrook. "We hit the ball better this year, but the competition wasn't as good." River Dell is led by two of the mainstays of the past three years, pitcher-outfielder Don Low and catcher Paul Schmonsees.

Low (7-0, 0.29 ERA, .273 BA) pitched a one-hit shutout Sunday to beat Wyckoff, 7-0 in the State final, while Schmonsees rebounded from a poor high hitter TOO 300 0000 JB: Barra 3B: DeSimone ail iuu Batterin: Jones It- 71 and V. "Lang and Tracy returned from college to bolster the club at two important positions, and our kids are motivated by the chance to go back." Holbrook also picked up Bob Ostrom of Harrison (9-2) from the State tournament and may be the pitcher River Dell needs to defend its regional championship and perhaps win the national title.

He was one of two pitchers to beat River Dell this year. The opener against the Re-gina Athletic Federation of the Bronx is at noon tomorrow, with the double-elimination tourney scheduled to end Sunday. Another River Dell team travels to Waterbury, tomorrow to start play in this year's Mickey Mantle regional tourney. Bolsbui, a three-time Iowa State champion. Holehsworth had three hits, as did Bruce Hildebrandt, and Jeff Albies had a double and triple. Gerry Flynn was the beneficiary of the 15-hit attack, pitching a six-hitter for his second win. SECOND PLACE Teaneck blanked Englewood, 4-0, behind Larry Havens' four-hit pitching.

The FDU ace struck out six and walked three. The Blues jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first as Dale Berra doubled home a run and later scored on a ground out. Tea-neck added unearned runs in the third and fourth off loser Ed Jones. Oradell was eliminated by Parsippany-Troy Hills East National, 10, in Section 1. Par- Troy advanced to the sectional final.

Nick Lattanzio's two-run appointed defensive line coach at Western Illinois University. After a one-year stint as assistant football coach and head wrestling coach at Brookline High School in Brookline, McKeown went to Curry in 1969.
