Herthel of 963 West Base Line have received a letter from their son, Sgt. Clifton Herthel, from "somewhere in the Philippines," telling of the twenty-fifth birthday celebration given for him by the family with which he is billeted. He has been overseas 28 months. Sergeant Herthel, who said he had passed "four Christmases and New Years and birthdays in the Army," formerly was employed as a Sun carrier. He graduated from San Bernardino High school in 1939 and services as a company dispatcher.

Shay.

Brock was taken into custody by Deputies L. J. Liess and H. E. Mo-gle in connection with the asserted offenses, which, they said, occurred last Sunday.

Spence were conducted yesterday at 11 a.m. from the Mark B. Shaw Memorial chapel with the Rev. S. W.

Bartlett officiating. Songs were "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Acting as pallbearers were N. R. Lee, G. R.

Kas-tel, T. H. Rowe, Ray Knuckles, Jack Dexter and William R. Cogswell. Interment was in City cemetery.

MRS. HARRIET GIBSON Funeral services for Mrs. Har riet Gibson will be held today at 2:30 p.m. from the Stephens Bobbitt chapel. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery.

LEEMAN GUINN Leeman (Mc) Guinn, retired Santa Fe electrician, died yester day in the Ramona Community hospital. He was 81 years old, a native of Benton county, Iowa and has resided in San Bernardino 23 years and California for 33 years. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Effie Guinn; three sons, Claude R. Guinn of Colton, Warren B.

Guinn of San Bernardino and Marion L. Guinn of the Marine Corps and one daughter, Mrs. Bernice E. More of Colton. Six grandchildren, a sister and two brothers also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Stephens Bobbitt chapel. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery. MICHAEL H. RYAN Michael H.

Ryan, 78 years old, a native of Illinois and formerly a resident of San Bernardino, died Wednesday in the Santa Fe hospital in Los Angeles. He was a retired Santa Fe brakeman and resided in San Bernardino for many years until moving to Los Angeles several years ago. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. Two daughters, Mrs. Ted Smith and Miss Catherine Ryan, both of Los Angeles, and a son, William C.

Ryan of Portland, survive. Rosary will be recited tonight at 7:30 at the Stephens Bobbitt chapel and funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the St. Bernardine Catholic church. Skin cancer is comparatively rare in the Negro and American Indian.

McDaniel of San Ber nardino, a fighter-bomber pilot with a P-47 Thunderbolt group, has been promoted to first lieutenant, according to information received from a Twelfth Air force base in Italy. He is the son of Mr.

and Mrs. Ralph L. McDaniel of 726 Virginia street. Lieutenant McDaniel, who has been overseas since November of 1944, has flown 54 combat mis sions in direct support of the allied ground forces in northern Italy. He holds the Air Medal, awarded for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial combat.

He enlisted in the Army air forces Oct. 18, 1942, receiving his wings and commission April 15, 1944, at Foster field in Texas. His group holds three war department distinguished unit citations awarded for outstanding performance of duty.
