Dr. Harold Dorn, department chairman, praised Podmeyer for his "interest in balancing technical education with a systematic study of the humanities and the social sciences." to 5:30 p.m. FINAL DRASTIC REDUCTIONS in our Men's, Ladies' and University Shops The board of education of the Northern Valley Regional High School District is asking Dema-rest residents who wish to serve on the board to file an. application. The vacancy exists as a result of the recent resignation of Jane HellawelL who served on the board five years. Requirements to become a member are being legal voting age, being able to read and write, having lived in the district two years, and having bo interest in any contract with or claim against the board.

Letters of application should be submitted to Richard R. Dorow, board secretary and school business administrator, Northern Valley Regional High School District, 162 Knickerbocker Road, Demarest, N.J. 07627. Applications are being accepted for a special education program for preschoolers ages 3-5 who show signs of delayed development in language or social skills. Children whose parents live in Region VI are eligible.

The region covers Bogota, Cliffside Park, Edgewater, Englewood, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fairview, Fort Lee, Leonia, Lit-' tie Ferry, Palisades Park, Ridgefield, and Ridge-field Park. The next session of the federally funded program will take place in September at Anna C. Scott Elementary School in Leonia. the staff will consist of specially trained teachers and a speech-language pathologist. Classes will feature art, music, gym, ajid use of the library.

Children will participate in assemblies, book fairs, and holiday parades. Parents who feel that their child is in need of help due to slowed emotional or intellectual development may contract their local child-study team or Dr. William Mclvor, Region VI director, at 461-9100, extension 42 or 43. Community Services Second Hand Roses, the thrift shop operated by the Junior League of Bergen County, will hold its twice-a-year bag sale starting tomorrow. During this final clearance sale, customers may purchase for $5 a large grocery bag and fill it with any of the merchandise in the store.

Proceeds will benefit the league's community projects. The shop, at 25 Bergen Englewood, will close Saturday for alterations and renovations and reopen Tuesday, Sept. 14. Its house are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Brown of Ber-genfield, manager of wage and salary administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University, recently presented a lecture-demonstration on "The Life and Times of the Common Soldier in the American Revolution" to plebes at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. Brown, an expert in the field of American military and diplomatic history, teaches courses in U.S. history at FDU's Edward Williams College in Hackensack and an outreach program at Hoffmann-LaRoche. He is a contributing author for the "International Military Encyclopedia" and a candidate for a PhD in American colonial history at Rutgers University.

ENGLEWOOD The works of Peter Rash-ford of Ringwood are on display through Aug. 10 at Midlantic National BankCitizens, 1 Engle St Rashf ord, a recent graduate of Syracuse (N.Y.) University's fine arts college, is an aspiring illustrator of children's books. This interest is evidenced in his subject matter, which abounds in the images of fairy tales. His media are waterco-lors, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, and pen and ink. He was awarded a best-of-show award and first place for a pen and ink drawing and a second place in watercolors at the recent Preakness Shopping Center show.

Organizations Five top high school graduates were honored at a tea in the home of Dr. Gene-Ann P. Horne, president of the Bergen County's Iota Epsilon chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. The honorees received certificates for outstanding academic achievements. At the com-.

mencement programs of their high schools, they were presented scholarships by the sorority. The recipients were Sandra G. Verley of Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood Daneen Hendrick G. Dawn Howard and Deborah Laughinghouse ($500) of Tea neck High School; and Andrea B. Williams ($500) of Hackensack High School.

Ethel McGhee Davis, wife of the late educator Dr. John W. Davis and a charter member of the chapter, presented a certificate to Miss Verley for the scholarship named in Mrs. Davis's honor. Alice Benekin, a member of the scholarship committee and an instructor in the business education department of Teaneck High School, presented certificates to Miss Hendrick, Miss Howard, and Laughinghouse.

Miss Williams, who was unable to attend the tea, received a certificate from Louise Porter at Hackensack High School. Remarks were made by Dr. Home, a pediatrician at Harlem Hospital in New York, and Theodora S. Lacey, winner of this year's New Jersey Teacher of the Year award.
