Entertainment 'Gandhi9: sweeping scope and power stubborn Muslim leader who ultimately insists to Gandhi's dismay on the partition of India and Pakistan. This complex tapestry concentrates on the public side of Gandhi's life speaking largely in slogans while mostly ignoring his foibles. At-, tenborough and his John Briley, sidestep, for Gandhi's practice of taking young women into his bed to test his vow of celibacy. The film also skirts the Mahatma's enigmatic relationship! with Mirabehn (Geraldihe James), the admiral's daughter who became one of his closest followers. Only in two scenes do we see the private; Gandhi an argument with his; wife, Kasturba (Rohini Hattangady), when she balks at cleaning a latrine i in his ashram; and an affecting de-; piction of his wife's death.

1 -Hi 1 By Lou Lumenick Movie Critic Only an incredibly self-assured director or a foolish one would undertake a film about Mahatma Gandhi. While his leadership of India's struggle for independence is natural cinematic material, civil disobedience hardly lends itself to the camera. Then there is Gandhi's very unwestern asceticism and the temptation to canonize the man that Lord Mountbatten said would "go down in history on a par with Buddha and Jesus Christ" Given the inherent obstacles in "Gandhi," Richard Attenborough has directed an astonishingly successful epic that pulls audiences along on an emotional tether for nearly ZV hours. "Gandhi" recalls "Lawrence of Arabia" in its magnificently handled crowd scenes, its sweep of the landscape, and the charismatic performance of a moVie newcomer, Ben Kingsley, in the central role. But David Lean's 1962 film chronicled less than two years in the life of T.

EI Lawrence, while "Gandhi" covers more than half, following Gandhi from his career as a young activist attorney to his death as a world-revered figure at the age of 78. "Gandhi" also delves literate-ly into Britain's lengthy colonial reign on the subcontinent and the irreconcilable conflicts between the country's Hindu majority and its. sizeable Moslem minority. In this beautifully crafted film's preface, its makers acknowledge the liberties they've taken in rearranging characters and events, aiming instead to be "faithful in spirit to the record." Gandhi's politicization "Gandhi" opens with his assassination in 1948, quickly segueing into Gandhi's arrival in 1893 South Africa, where he discovers that even with British legal training and Bond Street clothing, as a "colored" man he cannot occupy a first-class partment aboard a train. The newly politicized Gandhi and his followers are brutally clubbed and jailed when they protest their status by burning the identity cards they are required to carry.

But the demonstration effectively illustrates the enormous public-relations impact of his passive resistance. as shrewd a man as you'll ever meet, as other- tV VI I -7f; Martin Sheen and Ben Kingsley in "Gandhi" "1 MS worldly as he seems," one reporter remarks.) Slowly, Gandhi's nonviolence em-. barr asses the South African government into capitulation, and he returns to India in 1915, already a legendary figure. (The chronology is a little vauge, probably inescapable when events are so drastically telescoped.) Gandhi sets out by train across India's 700,000 villages a beautifully evocative sequence, one of the few times Attenborough lets Billy Willams's and Ronnie Taylor's lush cinematography compete with the film's steady narrative drive. By this time, Gandhi is traveling third-class, he has renounced his Western clothing and shaved his head, and embraced a spartan vegetarian life style.

He also sends away one of his closest friends and allies, British minister Charlie Andrews (Ian Char-leson from "Chariots of telling him: "They have to be sure what has to be done can be done by an Indian alone." Thus begins a series of confrontations with the colonial government over an escalating series of demands, with Gandhi skillfully manipulating the press to magnify the impact of his nonviolent pro- tests. The film's first half concludes with a sequence of raw, numbing emotional power, almost in a class with the attack on the Odessa steps in "Potemkin," as colonial troops mow down 1,516 unarmed Indians trapped in a small public square, their only refuge a bloody welL "Gandhi" continues to build after the intermission, as Gandhi leads a brilliantly symbolic march to the sea to protest the colonial salt tax. A second classic sequence rapidly follows the clubbing of his followers, row by row, by British soldiers with bamboo canes. Even as Gandhi makes headway with his colonial masters, he comes into conflict with many of his followers, who find it difficult to turn the other cheek while their wives and chilren are being killed. Even his closest ally, Nehru (Roshan Seth), has doubts, and Gandhi embarks on a series of fasts when bloodshed erupts.

By this point, it's clear that his real enemy all along was not the British but greed and bigority, ultimately personified by Mohamed Ali Jinnah (Alyque Padamsee), suave and CENiicr UEAITtlS 39 00 5 CO 30 CO i I -u IIAIliliWIMWb LfBMml i loot MKACX AILEV tMOPWNO corn ON II. 1 a TFK. MY FAVORITE YEAR Peter O'Toole jpc EXTRA Starring Montr Python' MICHAEL PALIN and MAGGIE SMITH I. TERRESTRIAL JEKYLL A HYDE- TOGETHER AGAIN AN OFFICER AND GENTLEMAN Eg Bemused by greatness Ben Kingsley, an Indo-British veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company, is simply superb as Gandhi. Besides an uncanny physical resemblance to Gandhi, Kingsley conveys Gandhi's paradox as a selfless man who was well aware (and bemused) by his own greatness. His very walk projects the man's authority, and Kingsley convincingly ages during the film. The acting in "Gandhi" is near-flawless, and the casting is impeccable.

Besides the excellent Indian actors in the largest roles, there are notable cameos by John Gielgud and John Mills as the crusty British viceroys, both of whom drastically underestimate Gandhi; Edward Fox as General Dyer, who cold-bloodedly orders the Amristar massacre; Trevor Howard as a sympathetic judge who tries Gandhi for sedition; and Martin Sheen, as a New York Times reporter who serves as a Greek chorus. The film's only false note is sounded by Candice Bergen, who makes a travesty of her brief appearance as photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White the only man I know who makes his own clothes," she gushes with all the panache of a Jane Pauley).
