18 17 HIGHLIGHTS LEISURE! TV WEEK The Oldtimers comes to CBC- TV CBC television is about to try a new concept by putting together a series produced on a regional basis but blended into a Canadian whole. If it works, it opens up a whole new range of possibilities that could wipe out the internal bickering of the CBC and present some really memorable, cross-Canada programs. It's called The Oldtimers and is an eight-part series put together by Donnalu Wigmore of CBC Toronto. She is executive producer for the series, which begins Nov. 11.

But she is backed by top regional producers, each of whom put together a show concentrated on one area. There was Mike Poole of Vancouver, 1973 Wilderness Award winner; Jack Emack of Edmonton, Bill Ryan of Saskatoon, Norm Bortnik of Winnipeg, Barbara Emo of Montreal and Jack Kellum, Hal Andrews and the 1974 Wilderness Award winner, Dave Quinton of St. John's. They have been scattered over some 4,000 miles shooting film and doing interviews and shipping the results to Toronto for final editing. Donnalu was delighted with what she received.

"These oldtimers are people who are full up with life," she says. "This series is to remind us of the past, and a different The first program deals with the old North West Mounted Police and people close to them. Included are Mrs. Rosie Davis, a 100-year-old who was registered for the reserve treaty of 1877; Fred Bard, 96, of Edmonton, who remembers the Blackfoot language he learned as a scout in the Cypress Hills; Mrs. Percy Cutting, 92, a wife of one of the early Redcoats, who remembers prisoners kept in a cell in her kitchen with the Cypress Hills detachment.

And there is John Jamieson, 97, who lives at the Union Club in Victoria. He enlisted in Halifax in 1893 and was posted to the dusty prairie town of Regina. He remembers: "In the Mounted Police you had to be determined and responsible, but you also had to be friendly. You never thought of yourself particularly as a policeman. You were part of the setup of the country." JOHN JAMIESON SCHEDULES The series will follow in this order: Nov.

11, NWMP; Nov. 18, British Columbia; Nov. 25, Northwest Territories; Dec. 2, Saskatchewan; Dec. 9, Manitoba, subtited The Women; Dec.

16, Quebec; Dec. 23, Newfoundland; Dec. 25, Christmas Memories. Typical of the segments is the B.C. part, with interviews with some of our most interesting people.

There's Martha Warnock, for example, of Bargain Harbor, who has spent most of her 80 years in bush camps and float camps, cooking for loggers. There is Sid Wormald, 86, of Victoria, who came here from England in 1910 and homesteaded in the Queen Charlottes. And Fred Lade and his wife, Ina, who are the entire population of a town named Beaton in the Kootenays. He's 82 now but he drove stage coach in the halcyon mining days of eastern B.C. It sounds like quite a series.
