THE VANCOUVER SUN: MON APRIL 18, 1977 25 Sports in short I Captain's Party finally lands big one I UmpsYon't play with Turner's toy Budget Stable's Run Jay. Ken Skinner once again was the riding star with three winners, bringing his total to nine for the first four days of the meeting. Loseth, who had one winner Saturday, is second with seven. But Loseth's one winner was a dandy. He took the opening event with Arthur Bell's Winning Duke, which returned a handsome $80.60.

Ironically, Skinner finished second on another longshot, Haydn's Choice. Bettors who found more form in the jockey standings than in the field of maidens collected a tidy $142 quinella. GALLOP POLL The name of trainer George Cummins quietly disappeared from the program last week. He has been suspended (but not denied privileges of the grounds) pending determination of an investigation into circumstances surrounding a positive test for Butazolidin on one of his horses opening night. the Captain's party.

You may recall that he made history of sorts last year when he had to pay the biggest divorce settlement in the history of the province. Undeterred, he is now married again and spending much of his time in Toronto. Toronto is also the former home-town of Captain's Party. Morison purchased him there from trainer Gordon Huntley for about $50,000 two months prior to the 1975 running of the B.C. Derby.

Captain's Party finished second to Auguste in the Derby, one of the several occasions when he has been a bridesmaid in big races. As the lukewarm favorite with the crowd of 9,374, Captain's Party paid $6.00 after running the furlongs in 1:18 3 5ths. K.O. Fowlie's Alberta Green, originally nominated for the Lansdowne, was diverted instead into a six furlong allowance which he won easily by three lengths over Steinbrenner colt runs better than Yankees 1.500-metre events while Gaetan Boucher of Ste. Foy, also won with 12 points in the men's 500 and races on the 125-metre oval that saw a number of racers take spectacular falls.

Kathy Vogt of Winnipeg, who won the women's race Sunday with a time of one minute, 43.41 seconds, finished second over-all in the standings with eight points while Nancy Durnin, also of Winnipeg, stood sixth in the final standings. Webster's winning time in the 500 was 49.54 seconds, placing her just ahead of team-mates Vogt and Durnin while her 1,500 gold medal was at the expense of two U.S. sisters, Valerie and Vicky Retmann, who finished second and third respectively. Boucher's time of 46.44 in the men's 500 gave him the edge over American Craig Kressler and Japan's Hiroshi Toba. The young Canadian also took the 1,000 in 1:55.69 to defeat Briton Steve Pearce and Kressler.

Ruins sifted CHERRY HILL, N.J. (AP) Investigators tore at the charred wood and steel remains of Garden State Park with a bulldozer and crane Sunday hunting for the cause of a fire that destroyed the racetrack and possibly killed two employees, The investigation team unsuccessfully searched through the ruins of the clubhouse and grandstand for the third day Sunday, looking for any victims, missing cash or a clue to the source of the fire. "We're just hunting," a spokeman said. He said there were a number of rumors concerning the fate of two men, employees at a food concession who have been missing since flames destroyed the five-storey building during the sixth race Thursday. Tortillas slow By ARCHIE McDONALD Captain's Party is a bit like a greyhound pursuing a mechanical rabbit.

He often gets close but hasn't caught the big thoroughbred prizes at Exhibition Park. In 35 lifetime starts he has only been off the board worse than fourth once and that was in his final start last year when the stewards moved him from third to fifth for unneceessary roughness on the final turn. The 5-year-old horse may have had that setback in mind Saturday when he came out to win the $10,950 Lansdowne Handicap by one-half length over Sengara Brothers Cash Your Ticket. Jack Guest's B.C. bred Willies Revenge came gumbootin' through, the mud to catch two-time defending champion Blue Thumb for third and would have won it all if the distance had been furlongs and a couple of jumps.

Cuthbert passes pressure test TORONTO (CP) Montreal's Linda Cuthbert overcame a psychological obstacle Sunday and produced what she termed the most important victory of her diving career at the Canada Cup international diving competition. "I'm so happy I didn't crack under the pressure," Cuthbert, who performed brilliantly in last summer's Olympic preliminary round before folding in the final, said after winning the women's 10-metre event at the Etobicoke Olympium. had better scores before but winning has never been more important than it was today. There were so many times I just folded under pressure, but not this time." Cuthbert, 20, finished slightly ahead of Vancouver's Teri ork, the Canadian champion who took sixth spot at Montreal. Cuthbert accumulated 358.05 points while York managed 356.85.

Janet Nutter of Toronto was third with 355.86, followed by Cindy Shatto, also of Toronto, 322.50; Christine Loock, Fort Worth, 316.35 and Barb Weinstein, Cincinnati, 314.19. Cindy Mclngvale of Columbus, Ohio, who won the three-metre title Friday, was eighth with 296.04 points. Robert Cragg of Maple Glen, recorded a major upset in the men's three-metre final Sunday, defeating world champion Phil Boggs of the University of Michigan. Cragg finished fifth at Montreal and Boggs took the gold. Kent Bosler, the U.S.

tower-diving champion, won the 10-metre event Saturday ahead of Mexico's Carlos Giron. ATLANTA (AP) Umpires don't appreciate the way the Atlanta Braves are using owner Ted Turner's new toy a $1.6 million electronic scoreboard capable of showing instant replays. The crew working Atlanta's 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros Sunday stalked off the field and threatened to forfeit the game after fans booed a video replay showing Bob Watson scoring for Houston on a passed ball in the fourth inning. "I knew something like this would happen," said Ed Sudol, the crew chief who led the umpires in a walkout that lasted a minute. Sudol said the umpires' basic agreement with baseball forbids the showing on an inpark screen of any controversial play because of the possibility of inciting a crowd.

'iChrist almighty," Sudol said, "Put yourselves in our shoes. We could have gotten killed. It's dangerous. You get people beered up and you don't know what could happen." Sudol and the other umpires, Terry Tata, Bruce Froemming and Dick Stello, returned to the field after Bill Lucas, Braves' director of players development, ordered the person operating the scoreboard to stop showing close plays. it's different BALTIMORE (AP) Billie Jean King will join Dr.

Renee Richards and Bobby Riggs in a mixed doubles match here next month. Promoter Mort Schwartz said King will team with veteran Gardner Mulloy in the May 10 match at the downtown Civic Centre. Dr. Richards, the transsexual tennis player, and Riggs will be on the opposing team. Schwartz announced the "different" tennis match at a news conference Friday.

But at that time, King had not yet agreed to participate. "You've got to inject a new subject into sports entertainment," Schwartz said at a news conference. "This will be a little different that the average tennis match." The mixed doubles format was decided on rather than a Riggs-Richards confrontation because "after Riggs played Billie Jean King, all such matches were sort of anticlimatic," Schwartz said. Canadians win GRENOBLE, France (CP) Canadian speed skaters won the over-all titles at the world indoor speed skating championships Sunday. Brenda Webster of Regina took the women's title with 12 points after inish-ing first in two races the 500 and Distance also was in the thoughts of Don Morison, who trains Captain's Party for Pat Ballentine.

"I would say that Captain's Party's best distance is somewhere between seven furlongs and a'mile," mused Morison. "Most of the Captain Gigs don't want to run too far. This horse will run farther but he gets there on class and guts." The Captain had a charmed journey Saturday under the guidance of Andy Smith. He sat behind paceseting Sweet Shooter and Cash Your Ticket, moved out from the rail to challenge at the quarter pole and proved best in a hard drive. Chris Loseth, who rode Cash Your Ticket, thought the outcome may have hinged on the his horse's failure to leave the gate alertly.

"He hesitated just a split second. Then he took off after the field and used himself up a little. If he had broken sharper I could have got him to relax." Owner Ballentine was not on hand for TIMEOUT "For heaven's sake, Daphne, pick up the baton! Whaddya mean a gentleman would pick it up for a lady?" Comaneci tops gymnastic meet LONDON (Reuter) Nadia Comaneci, Romanian triple gold medal winner at the Montreal Olympics last year and still only 15, outscored the rest of the field in an international gymnastics competition Saturday. Comaneci won a total of 39.1 points, but because she was competing only as a guest by special arrangement with the organizers, she could not claim the women's title. Instead, the 16-year-old defending champion, Teodora Ungureanu, also a Romanian, retained the crown she won last year.

Sexetary is the first offspring of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat to get to the races. In Saturday's richest race, Max Gluck's Announcer overtook pace-setting Branford Court in the stretch and won the $116,000 Golden Gate Handicap over The Fop, with Sir Jason third. Favored Effervescing finished fifth and Telly's Pop, making his first start since last year's Hollywod Derby, was seventh. Announcer carried 115 pounds, including Marco Castaneda. He ran the 1 1-16 miles in and paid $8.80.

Apprentice Steve Cauthen came up a winner in the $80,250 Excelsior Handicap at Aqueduct when he got Sigmund Som-mer's favored Turn and Count home by lengths over Festive Mood after coming from far back. Turn and Count paid $2.80 after carrying top weight of 123 pounds over the miles in 1:51. There was no show betting because three of the six starters ran as an entry Turn and Count, third-place Gabe Benzur and Root Cause. At Hialeah, Copano, carrying 11 to 17 pounds more than 12 other fillies and mares in the field, scored by XV lengths over Imogene II in the $56,000 Black Helen Handicap. Frond finished third.

Copano, 126, owned by Dr. J.D. King and ridden by Larry Saumell, paid $5.40 after racing the IVa miles on the grass in 1:49 4-5. The winner now has finished first in all 11 of her races on the grass, but lost two oi those wins on disqualifications. Scores League t.

While the defending American League champion ankees have lost three in a row, a 3-year-old Steinbrenner-owned colt named Steve's Friend won the Hollywood Derby on Sunday and probably will be entered in the Kentucky Derby on the strength of that finish. Two other colts, Affiliate and Habitony, most likely will make the trip also on the basis of their finishes.

Affiliate was second, three-quarters of a length back and a nose ahead of favored Habitony, who won the Santa Anita Derby last month. Steve's Friend, ridden by Rubin Hernandez, returned $70.80. He ran 1V miles in 1:47 4-5, bettering the Derby record of set by Crystal Water last year, and earned $140,000 of the $227,000 purse. The eolt had previous career earnings of Steve's Friend's best previous finish was in the Fountain of outh Stakes in Florida in early when he finished second. This was his first victory in six trips this year.

There was another race for 3-year-olds, the $27,500 Hirsch Jacobs, one of two stakes at Pimlico which opened Saturday after a long strike. Iron Derby, not eligible for the Kentucky Derby, won the Hirsch Jacobs by a neck over Jeff's Try as favored Royal Ski finished fourth behind Tiny Monk.
