Replicas of Bonhomme Carnaval, a huge snowman, decorate the streets and hotel lobbies, along with outdoor ice sculptures, during this event. Earlier this year the students at L'ECOLE BI-LINGUE SCHOOL, Vancouver, had a two-day replica celebration of the annual Quebec carnival.

Each class made papier-mache figures for the festivity. These were similarto the Quebec ice sculptures. The carnival parade included figures of a robot, castle, skunk, elephant, mouse and crocodile. Students had a chance to taste French Canadian pea soup, French bread, and la tire, a candy made from maple syrup. At the dedication of the uoly temple in Jerusalem it was discovered that only one day's supply of oil could be located to light the temple's perpetual flame. But the oil lasted. It lasted for exactly eight days, which was just the right amount of time to prepare new oil.

Many Sun Rays readers are taking their Christmas stockings out of storage and getting them ready to hang over the fireplace on Christmas eve. Here, in Canada we are making preparations to celebrate Christmas. Have you ever wondered how children in other countries celebrate this sea-, son? In Sweden, a special day of celebration is held on Dec. 13.

It is called Saint Lucia Day. Saint Lucia, is a fourth century saint who is associated with festivals of light. Her name, Lucia or Lucy, comes from the Latin word, "lux" meaning light. Dec. 13 was thought to be the longest and darkest night of the year in Sweden.

The Swedes adopted Saint Lucia with her crown of lighted candles as a symbol of light in their long dark winter. TUM8LEWEEDS CoevTM! 1979 (JQPGB HOtmO C. The girl gets out of bed before any one else is up. She puts on a white dress that is belted with a red sash.

On her head she wears a crown of lingonberry leaves and white candles. The candles are carefully attached so they don't set fire to her hair. Lussibruden then wakes up her family with a song, and serves them hot coffee and small cakes. The cakes are called "lussikatter" or "Lucia They are a symbol of good luck because the cat is supposed to keep the devil away. Lussibruden is also celebrated in schools and offices.

IN The holiday is not a major one, but it is an important one for children.

After sunset on each of the eight nights of Hannukah a candle is added to the Menorah or candelabra. By the last night of the festival eight candles are burning brightly. After lighting the candles families gather to sing and play traditional games and songs. One special game is dreidel (dray-dol). The dreidel, or four winged spinning top, bears the Hebrew letters nun, gimel, hei and shin.

Each letter stands for one word in the phrase, Ness gadol hayah sham, which means a great miracle has happened here. Special dinners are also prepared during Hannukah and a North American family favorite is latkas, or crisply fried potato pancakes. In Israel the traditional Hannukah treat is sweet donuts with jam. And, just like Christmas, there are presents for the children. Hannukah gifts as well as gelt, or money, are accepted with much happiness.

Hannukah is a joyous family holiday that is sometimes overshadowed by the noise and jubilation of Christmas. But, for the families that celebrate it, the candle lights of Hannukah are a true reminder of the great historical events that are woven into the heritage of the Jewish people. twvm muz rci OftC. i Unilrf ffl.iturfl SyfWl- Iff I fit IT' ACCORDING TO GUINNESS mm )) The oldest person break a world record Irish-born John triple Olympic hammer throw champion for the U.S., i TUCKER 1900-1908, who set his last world record ot 1 84 feet 4 Sm 0 1 jW 4LLTHE50GH For many B.C. students the bright lights of Christmas are not nearly as beautiful as the candle lights that celebrate the festival of Hannukah.
