THIRD ST. sincere Br MARGARET McMAM'S NEW YORK A small boy, badly in need of a haircut, with a plaid shirt hanging outside his blue jeans, raced along West 53rd toward the stage door of CBi-Television Studio 50. "Hey Aud," he panted. "Wait up. Aud, could you give me three or four tickets to tonight's show?" Aud waited up.

"Hi, Lester," she said. "Gee Lester, not for tonight. Why do you need so many? I'll have two tickets about the middle of May and I'll try to save them for you." Lester, realizing that this as no fast brush-off, was agreeable to waiting until May, stood back, grinning, while his friend, Aud, signed autographs and accepted a gardenia from delegates of a New Jersey fan club. ALICE WELL REWARDED Audrey Meadows, who will col lect 51,000,000 for her next three years' work, portraying Alice, in "The Honeymooners," and the re cent winner of the Emmy for the best supporting actress in a regular TV series, is obviously a fig ure to watch in the entertainment world. There are those who might have some hesitation in approaching the lady with such familiarity.

But to Lester and company-she's Aud, or Alice, just an old friend, whom they see faithfully in their homes every Saturday night, and visit most Saturday af ternoons, when she's on her way to rehearsal for the Jackie Glea- son show. Actually, the minister's daughter, with the red gold hair, is a direct, friendly, matter-of-fact kind of girl, who does not feel that her cup of riches is a tribute to her talent alone. RESULT OF HARD WORK "People may be inclined to think of me as a rather quick, almost outrageous, success," she said. "But this is really the cumulative result of all the work and expe rience over the years." Sitting in one of the theater seats, while the bustle of rehearsal and the blare of the orchestra made an outsize din in the ears, Miss Meadows failed to mention one quality -which' she obviously has in abundance. It is initiative.

At the time she got the part of Alice in "The Honeymooners," she had a role in "Top Banana" on Broadway and she was acting in the daily 15-minute television Bob and Ray show at NBC. While chatting one day with her own manager, Val Irving, and with Jackie Gleason's manager, they asked her if she knew an actress who might be the right type to play the part of Alice. "I know just the girl for the part," she said. "Me." They were only partially con vinced, but they set up a date for her to see Gleason. After her in terview with the comedian, his re mark to the two managers was: "Are you guys out of.

your minds? Alice is supposed to be a pathetic, beatendown, wornout woman. This girl is as far re moved from that as anyone could be." STIRRED TO ACTIOX The well-dressed Miss Meadows who likes expensive suits, and glamorous dinner dresses, was so irritated by what she considered the lack of vision on the part of all three0 gentlemen, that she was stirred to action. Next morning she had a photographer come to her apartment and take pictures of her with her hair in curlers, wearing a cotton house- dress, working at the kitchen sink She sent the pictures to Jackie Gleason by special messenger. Gleason took a look at the pic tures and hired her, without even an audition. One of the people watching the rehearsal of the Jackie Gleason show this balmy spring afternoon was Joseph Pasternak, the well known MGM movie producer.

He was introduced to Miss Mea dows. "We love you in Hollywood," said Mr. Pasternak. "Watch you every Saturday night. Wouldn't miss you." "That's very nice," said Miss Meadows graciously.

"When are vnil cninc tn cfar a in ruturo" COOPER LIKES HER Miss Meadows said that when Gary Cooper saw her on the screen during the Emmy awards presen tation, he declared: "That's the girl I want to play opposite me in my next movie. Since Miss Meadows will be working all summer on the film ing of the next season's series of "The Honeymooners," she would probably not be available to go to Hollywood this summer, but, eventually, she would like to do a movie.
