SMITH THE SOURCES OF HIS POWER Read Matthew Jesus trusted in prayer.

Most people pray and then hope. They present their appeals to God, sometimes frantically, and then go on their way tense and anxious as though they could not trust God to hear or answer. Jesus prayed and then believed. He presented his petitions, and then went on his way confident and serene as though he could be sure that God had heard and would act. No small part of his confident manner was due to the fact that he carefully considered his petitions before he offered them, to make sure they would be pleas which God could endorse.

When he was not sure he added "if it be thy will." But in every case he was certain that God had heard and that God would do the best that could be done under the circumstances. Sometimes it happens that God does much better than we ask him to do though we may find difficulty in believing it is better. To his disciples Jesus gave this bit of advice; "When ye pray," he said, "believe that ye receive." (Mark 11:24.) He saw God all about him all the time, in growing lilies, ravens, storms, lost sheep, solid and substantial buildings, new wineskins, mother hens, and wayside trees. One who was so conscience of God's presence could not be indifferent to God's promises of power. This made it possible for him to believe he had his answer before he saw evidences of it.

Having prayed, he went on his way without a doubt. Knowing the honesty of his own heart, he trusted God. Forgive me for praying as if thou didst not hear me, God. It is. because my heart is anxious, and my anxiety is a product of my fears.

I know thou hast heard my pleas; I will proceed as if thou art ready to grant them when they are reasonable requests. Amen. Before you present your next appeal to God, examine it carefully. Is it one which is apt to find favor with him? Is it a plea which a righteous God could grant? Is it one a moral God could grant? Is it one an honest God could grant? From "Making a Go of Life," by Roy L. Smith, published and copyrighted by Abingdon Press.
