C-6 spouts THE SUNDAY RECORD, OCTOBER 5. 1975 Wean County. Htm Jane 7U Giants must crack Cards' wall Cowboys put computer to good use 1 -N Pro fcvf Football Vinny DiTranl A 1 THE GIANTS were almost as proud of their forward wall, at least until last week when it suddenly developed holes. The Redskins swarmed past the blockers to reach quarterback Craig Norton seven times and added a dump of reserve Carl Summerell In the embarrassing 4913, defeat. "But the Giants had some people hurt," offers Coryell, "and it's very tough to get a unit together when you have to make a lot of substitutions." Unfortunately for coach Bill Arnsparger, he will have to make one substitution again today since guard Tom Mullen By VINNY DI TRAM lull writer ST.

LOUIS- The St. Louis Cardinals' offensive line permitted 16 quarterback lacks taut year. The New York Giant offensive line allowed eight sacks last week. The divergent talca of the two offensive fronts could be the determining factor today when the Cards and Giants meet at Busch Memorial Stadium (2 p.m., Channel 2, WNEW radio). Louis (1-1), which has not allowed quarterback Jim Hart to be sacked this year, is 7V-point favorite.

The solidifying of the Cards' offensive Una had lot to do with the amazing resurgence of the club last year. In the past Hart had feared for his safety whenever he took the field. But now the veteran quarterback spends a relatively hit-free life behind his small, but agile blocking quintet. "It's just a matter of a group of guys getting together and developing a lot of pride In what they are doing," says Cardinal coach Don Coryell. "Some of It Is Hart's doing, too.

We'd rather have him dump the ball off somewhere than get hit." (shoulder) won't be ready. Dick Kndcrle, who had a rough time against Diron Tal-bert last week, will be at left guard (vs. Dave Rowe) with Willie Young returning at left tackle (vs. Ron Yankowskl), Rowe leads the Cards in sacks with three. St.

Louis, however, Is healthy and that Includes the impregnable front of tackles Dan Dierdnrf (vs. Dave Gallagher) and Roger Finnle (vs. Jack Gregory), guards Conrad Dobler (vs. Jim Piclrzak) and Bob Young (vs. John Menden-hall, maybe), and center Tom Banks.

In addition to providing protection for Hart (27 of 55 for 464 yards, five TDs), the unit docs well blocking for runners Jim Otis (154 yards and Terry Metcalf (124 DAN D1ERDORF Protects Hart well Incidentally, the last time a linebacker ran back a kickoff for a touchdown was 1969 when Bobby Bell of the Kansas City Chiefs grabbed a Denver onsides attempt and zipped 53 yards past the Broncos. "Our defense Is SinB to have to be better than it has been. Hart, Metcalf, Mel Gray. Those are good people." HOPE FOR the Giant de- fense comes in the expected return of right tackle Men- denhall, who missed almost all of the Redskin game with an ankle injury, and right cor- ner Henry Stuckey, who has missed both regular-season games with a knee injury. The Giants rate last among NFC teams In defense and de- fense against the pass, while the Cards are No. 1 in NFC j- pass offense.

LAST WEEK: 4-4. Season: 71, per. BEST SIT: SAINTS At first glance It looked like an error In the scoring summary of last week's Dallas-St. Louis game. The line read.

Henderson, 97, kickoff return," and although 97-yard kickoff returns aren't all that improbable, a 97-yard kickoff return by a rookie linebacker seemed impossible. Nevertheless, the line stands correct. Tom Henderson, Dallas' second pick In the first round of this year's draft did indeed run 97 yards with a Cardinal kickoff last week. He had an assist from fellow rookie Rollie Woolsey, however. Woolsey, the Cowboys' regular return man.

fielded the Jim Bakken kickoff and at the three, handed off to Henderson coming back from a blocking spot in the wedge. Henderson raced to the left sideline and outdistanced all the bewildered Cardinals for the TD. Why did coach Tom Landry employ Henderson, rather than a back or receiver, who normally run back kicks? "He's the second fastest man on the team," says a Cowboy spokesman of Henderson. "Matter of fact, he may be the regular deep man pretty soon." WHEN HE WAS drafted out of tiny Langston College, Henderson was an unknown linebacker with tremendous potential. He is a legitimate 9.5 sprinter and has triple-jumped 49 feet.

His 6-foot-2, 220-pound body is a phenomenal piece of anatomy. "He's smart, he's agile, he's fast, he blocks punts, picks 'em up and runs 'em in for touchdowns, he chases people down from behind, he's all over the field," reports Dallas scout Red Hickey. Henderson naturally was ejecited when he reached the end zone Sunday, and tried to dunk the football over the crossbar for a spike to end his 97-yard jaunt. But he lost control of the ball as he went up. "Otherwise he would have done it," says the Cowboy spokesman.

"He can touch the crossbar with his elbow." Apparently, the Dallas scouting computer has found another future National Football League superstar. Henderson is spending his apprenticeship on the special teams while being groomed to take over the weakside linebacker spot from D.D. Lewis. All he needs is some experience and the sharpening of his techniques. "The coaches really are excited about his future," adds the spokesman.

LAST WEEK: Pat had seven winners, four losers and two pushes. Hit season figure It 14-10-2. His best bet, the Rams, pulled It out in the last tew minutes. Sea-ton mark on best bets is 1-1. Home teams were 4-7-2 by the spread and are 8-16-2 for the season.

Favorites were 74-2 tnd are year Malcolm Snider, an Atlanta offensive lineman, had a 48-yard scoring return in a similar situation against San Francisco. THIS IS THE first time in recent history, however, anyone besides a back or receiver has traveled the length of the field with a kickoff. The reverse return, and other things like the employment of a shotgun formation, are signs Landry is varying from his norm of recent seasons. "I guess I am gambling a little more," admits the Cowboy coach. "When your team is established, you don't do much of that.

But we haven't had anything we could count on 100 per cent this year. Therefore we're a little more wide open than usual and probably will continue to be." There are 12 rookies on this year's Cowboy squad. The Cowboys (2-0) open Detroit's PonMet domed stadium's regular season tomorrow night. And unlike the preseason, this time the 10-acre fiberglass roof will be inflated by the giant air circulation systems. Dallas has not visited the Lions since 1960, its first year in the league.

That also was the season Pete Rozelle was a rookie commissioner; the AFL was a fledgling threat to the NFL; and Detroit won the game, 23-14. The Lions haven't been able to defeat the Cowboys in four tries since. PRO NOTES Neal Craig replaces Van Green at strong safety for the hapless Cleveland Browns this week. That's the second defensive backfield change in two weeks for Forrest Gregg's club. Last week, ex-Giant Pete Athas took over for Eddie Brown at free safety Second-year tackle Randy Crowder leads the Miami Dolphins in tackles with 21.

And if Don Shula can't patch up his feud with Jake Scott, maybe he'll help out his old buddy, Bill Arnsparger, and ship the free safety to the Giants for a high draft choice. When George Blanda played his first pro game, 26 of the 43 San Diego Chargers, Oak-land's opponents today, weren't even born yet Atlanta's Dave Hampton leads the NFC with 221 yards rushing, six less than O.J. "For the first time we're running the ball a lot," explains veteran guard Randy Rasmussen. To a lineman, it means a lot of satisfaction opening a hole and seeing a man go through it. "We used to think strictly pass block," Rasmussen ex- plains.

"But now we're balanced and it's a lot more fun to tee off on a defensive guy, rather than drop back and wait to block." In 1969, the one-time Brigh-am Young University star was replaced by Douglass with the Chicago Bears.

0 .000 27 38' POLICE FIRE one of them has at least one injury. And that Rasmussen, I don't know how he played the second half. When he limped off at halftime, I figured he'd never get back in." Rasmussen has been hurting with torn rib ligaments. "As long as I don't get hit there I'll be okay against the Pats. I went nearly the entire first half against the Chiefs without getting hit.

But once I did, it was really painful." The Jets are hoping to run against the Pats in the same manner as last week. "It makes things a little easier in that K.C. used a three-man defensive line and so do the Pats," Rasmussen points out. "THE BIG difference is New England is the best when it comes to playing the three-man defense. The Chiefs were bigger but the Pats are much quicker." Center Wayne Mulligan, who takes the brunt of a three-man defense since there's always someone lined up on him, agrees: "I have to go against Ray Hamilton and not only is he strong, but very fast." Mel Lunsford and Craig Hanneman are the other Pa-' triots' linemen.

Instead of a lineman, Rasmussen will block against a linebacker either Sam Hunt or Steve King. The rest of the New York offensive line consists of veteran Winston Hill, Garry Puetz, Robert Woods and tight end Caster. "One other reason I enjoy the running game," Rasmussen says, "is it means we hold the ball longer than if we pass all the time. And that makes a lot of difference in winning or losing." JET NOTES Since no one knows whether or not Jim Plunkett, who is listed as questionable, will see any action, there are no odds on the game. Game is scheduled for an odd 1:06 kickoff per request by NBC WOR radio will broadcast the contest which is the Jets' earliest home opener in seven years.

But no one seemed to care when Rick Flagle drilled the ball into the end zone turf Friday night after sweeping 15 yards around right end for a touchdown. All he got was applause from both sides of the field.

Flagle's run gave Bethel High School its first points-since Nov. 5, 1973 but the touchdown wasn't enough to prevent the Bees from dropping their 17th straight game as Miami East triumphed, 47-6. It had been 14 games since Bethel had scored before Flagle made it into the end zone with 2:33 left in the contest. The extra point was blocked, but it really didn't matter Bethel was behind 47-6 at the time. Bethel had been outscored 723-0 over the last 15 games before Flagle's touchdown.
