The champ advances to a $100,000 winner-take-all final against Jimmy Connors. In Miami Beach, Fla, defending champion United States and unseeded South Africa won easy quarter-final games to advance to the semi-finals of the Sunshine Cup Matches between Nations tournament.

And finally, U.S.'s Connors is ranked No. 1 men's singles player in Tennis Magazine's 1976 world rankings. Sweden's Biom turned down the offer after consulting the top players. "We would have been in danger of losing our identity," McDonald said. "We feel it was a fairly determined attempt to put us out of business." Under an agreement made four years ago, the ILTF gives WCT a free hand to run its own tournament circuit from January to mid-May.

Then it takes over the tournament network for the rest of the year and runs the Grand Prix, which is spread over nearly 50 tournaments and is run on a cumulative points basis. Recently the ILTF-WCT agreement has shown signs of strain. Now the ILTF has announced a rival circuit during the WCT season, with 22 tournaments clashing directly with Hunt's events. WCT's 1977 circuit will carry $2.5 million in prize money. Rotterdam, Stockholm and Monte Carlo in March and April are left on WCT's calendar.

On the playing front, defending champions Dick Stockton and Rosemary Casals put down a surprising bid by South Africans Ilena Kloss and Cliff Drysdale for a 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 triumph in the opening match of the $80,000 World Mixed doubles tournament Thursday night in Dallas. Stockton continually amazed the crowd with his quick reflexes and relentless overhead shots. In Las Vegas, meanwhile, Manuel Orantes of Spain defeated Hie Nastase of Romania 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the first match of the $320,000 World Championship of Tennis challenge cup. The victory was worth to Orantes in the winner-take-ail match. A second match today paired Rod John McDonald, WCT's international director, made the charge against the Professional Tennis Council, which runs the main part of the world circuit in conjunction with the International Lawn Tennis Federation.

WCT posted a schedule of 15 tournaments with 22 players between January and May, culminating in the WCT final at 'Dallas, Tex. This year there were 25 tournaments and 44 players, The ILTF tried to persuade WCT to include its tournaments in the Grand Prix, runs through the year and culminates in the Masters Tournament. WCT v. Gil Morgan, working primarily off Marine's drives, combined for a six-under-par 66 and a one-stroke lead after Thursday's first round of the $200,000 Mixed Team golf championship. The format, combining men and women touring pros in one event for the first time in a decade, calls for both players to drive on each hole the men from the championship tees, the women from the ladies' tees. The differences in the tee markers ranged up to 70 yards on the wind-swept Blue Monster course at the Doral Country Club. The team then selects the drive it wants to play and the man and woman thereafter play alternate shots on the same ball, "Generally, the men are much better iron players than we are," said Hagge, in her 27th year on the ladies' PGA tour. "So the strategy was to play my drive as much as possible." It worked to near perfection.

The Hagge-Morgan combo, playing ployed Canadian track and field personnel contained the name of Paul Poce Thursday. Poce, the national distance coach from Toronto, has gone the way of Canadian Track and Field Association executive-director Ken Twigg, president Diane Clement and vice-president Johanna Kennedy in announcing his resignation, effective Dec. 31, 1976. Twigg, Clement and Kennedy submitted their resignations at a meeting two weeks ago when branch presidents rejected an increase in membership dues. Poce said that the unstable future of the national coaching program dictated by money being made available made it difficult for him to concentrate on his job.

"The problem with the CFTA is that since the Olympics it has gone from one crisis to another," said Poce. "They weren't giving me a framework to do a decent job. I can't live from six months to six months." Five exchanged in WHA swap fete POTTERS tamm uniform when Phoenix hosts the Edmonton Oilers tonight. Last year Hinse scored 98 points for the Aeros.
