The 46th SL entrance has been closed since last November because of "structural defects" that delayed scheduled upgrading and modernization of the station by six months. The entrance at the other end of the station remains in use. According to a spokesman for the, Transit Authority, some portions of the station at Queensborough Plaza already have been painted, and that job is expected to be completed later this year. He also pointed out that "heavy" reconstruction of a storm-damaged platform has delayed the re-opening of the 46th Street Station entrance.

"We want to show you," Nolan told the businessmen, "that the Transit Authority is accessible and that it is important for the Transit Authority to get feedback." Gunn said, "We're making a major capital effort to modernize the sta- borough Plaza Station with a gaggle of lawmakers and civic leaders, including Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan (D-Long Island City), Councilman Walter McCaffrey (D-Woodside), State Sen. George Onorato (D-Long Island City), and James Reed, the president of the Long Island Savings Bank, to discuss station-renovation programs and the service needs of subway and El riders in the legislative districts embracing Sunnyside, Woodside, and Astoria. At Queensborough Plaza, he also encounterd a number of local civic leaders who said they'd like the station spruced up with a paint job and other needed improvements. The group then boarded an east-bound train and rode three stops to the 46th Street Station in Sunnyside where a group of merchants from the area complained they were losing potential customers because the 46th SL entrance to the station was closed.
