SAN BERNARDINO SUN-TELEGRAM 23 Dec. 28. 1934 u.nij.mni.iJ,uLjiiii- Winners Named Descanso Gardens Plant of the Veek finrdcn Pointers HOLLIES, PYRACANTHA GROW IN S.B. COUNTY LADY CLARE CAMELLIA REACHES PEAK OF BLOOM red-berried variety, though. Some are orange.

Graber's Firethorn is perhaps the best red-berried pyracantha. Pyracantha is trouble-free most of the time. Occasionally some are attacked by fire blight disease. Then the plant usually dies. I've of ly seen one or two cases in eight years, though.

By JOHN L. THRELKELD Supt. Descanso Gardens. La Canada An outstanding variety of the Camellia Japonica, Lady Clare, is the plant of the week at Descan so Gardens, operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. The Lady Clare bears large, semi-double flowers, whose petals have a crinkled, irradiated texture.

The color is carmine-rose some times mottled white. Exposed sta mens of creamy yellow make a pleasing contrast in color. The Lady Clare began blooming in the latter part 01 jNovemoer and reached its peak Dec. 15. PROPER SPACING For foreground planting or for use as a basic shrut on tne norm or east side of a building, the Lady Clare is excellent.

English Holly (Hex aquifolium) is the thorny-leaved holly you usually see in drawings of Christmas holly. Unfortunately, you may have trouble getting berries, although the plant grows well enough. Our climate isn't too good for English Holly. Sometimes our winters are too warm. Grow the plant in shade or light shade.

This sometimes help berry production. NOT ALWAYS TRUE Also, the plant doesn't come true from seed. Thus, some English Holly plants fruit better than others. Some don't fruit at all. Give the plant plenty of water.

Plant English Holly where it can grow to eight or 10 feet, or figure on doing some pruning. Pruning can keep holly down to about four feet tall. Frost is no hazard, as this holly will stand temperatures as low as five degrees. Burford holly has yery large red berries about the size of cranberries. The leaves are very shiny, smooth on the edges.

This plant can be grown by desert residents, as well as San Bernardino valley folks. WITHSTANDS COLD Apparently, Burford holly will stand temperatures as low as 10 degrees. Some parts of the desert get colder than this, but plants in protected areas often get by cold rights. Pyracantha is another shrub that makes fine Christmas season dee orations. BUILD-IT-YOURSELF The superintendent of Death Valley National Monument reports that the collection of any plants or plant material from federal lands in the monument is prohibited by law.

The picking and destruction by picking of the plant commonly known as "Desert Holly" is causing concern to monument officials. This beautiful plant, which is already scarce and grows only in certain soil types and at low elevations, is protected by federal law, California State law, and Inyo County ordinance. LIMITED RANGE Apparently many monument and desert visitors do not realize that the range of this plant, as with many other desert species, is very limited, and, therefore, it must be protected if it is to be preserved. The appearance of the "Desert Holly" makes it especially appealing for holiday season decor Rooms Can Look Big Small rooms can look big if they're smartly decorated. Tricks that will help include good light ing of all corners, simplified walls and backgrounds, use of a large mirror on one wall, and place ment of furniture around a room so that it hugs the walls, says the December issue of Better Homes Gardens.

Can't Give Birthday Presents of Make 'Em Starry Scatter Pins to Wear In All-America Rose Contest Queen Elizabeth, Jiminy Cricket and Tiffany Given Nod A trio of loveliness are the All- America Roses of 1955 Tiffany, Queen Elizabeth and Jiminy Cricket. Rose fanciers may now obtain plants of these award-winning roses in nurseries throughout the state, says the California Assn. of Nurserymen. All three roses can be grown with great success in all areas of the state. Queen Elizabeth and Tiffany are California roses developed by rose hybridizers in this state.

This is sort of a special year in roses because it marks the debut of a brand new rose class Grand-iflora new hybrids maintaining the flower perfection of their hybrid tea parents but gaining much of the profuse flowering habit of the other side of the family, the Floribunda, The Grandifloras are borne in clusters, Floribunda style, but the individual stems are long enough to make the blooms fine for cutting. CHARACTERISTICS LISTED When Queen Elizabeth was named All-America winner in this new class, there was quite a lot of perplexity and discussion. This rose was neither "fish nor fowl" Hybrid Tea nor Floribunda and yet it was too fine a rose to pass up. So, a new class of roses Grandiflora was created. Grandi-flora are characterized by strong growtli five to six feet; strong stems, medium size flowers; lasting quality of cut flowers; continuation of bloom from mid-A i 1 nearly to Christmas; and heavy, disease-resistant foliage.

In the process of becoming All-America Roses, this trio was put through numerous tests at 22 test gardens located in the various climatic areas throughout the na tion. Tiffany, a Hybird Tea and Jiminy Cricket, a Floribunda, are representative of the latest stage of development among the Hybrid Teas and Floribundas. These two classes of roses are the two major rose classes already known to California gardeners. Hy bnd Teas have long been the principal type of a garden rose; rioriDunaas were introduced in 1935 and are especially popular in California where they produce so well and are widely used as hedges and border edgings. The name Jiminy Cricket is not.

a very sedate name as rose names go, but then the rose itself is not particularly sedate. Jiminy Crick et is pert and flashy with buds of tangerine-red and open blooms of a brilliant to soft coral orange. It grows to a medium height and is rather upright in habit vigorous, fast-growing and free-blooming with more fragrance than most Floribundas. DRAMATIC CONTRASTS Queen Elizabeth, an offspring of the Charlotte Armstrong variety, has its delicate pure pink blooms dramatically contrasted by glossy, deep green foliage. A new flower in a new class it is named for a comparatively new queen, Elizabeth II of Great Britain.

Both the buds and high centered open blooms are a delicate pink shade. Some of the medium size blooms appear on individual stems; other, in clusters, Floribunda-like. Either way the stems are long and almost thornless which makes cutting easy and painless. Also an offspring of the Charlotte Armstrong variety is Tiffany with long tapering buds and high-centered open flowers. One of its chief attractions is its warm clear pink color a rich salmon under tone seems to make the buds and open flowers glow.

The plant of Tiffany is vigorous and upright, growing to above average height with dark green leaves that show remarkable resistance to any foliage trouble, The blooms appear on long stems and the petals have a lot of substance which assures long-lasting flowers. HOLIDAY SPIRIT One of the ways to make this holiday spirit last for all 12 months is to give more thought to birthdays. They keep coming up all of the time. Girls all love jewelry and if you want to see stars in their eyes, try making them scatter pins patterned after the signs of the zodiac.

They're lucky to give and lucky to wear, and what's more they look mighty pretty pinned on a girl's sweater or coat. Since NBC's tele vision actress Jill Jarmyn suggest ed this idea, we asked her to be in the picture showing several of the completed pins. You can tell that she likes them. Pins of this kind may be made of wood, plastic, leather or even copper. The cost is practically nothing and it's one of our easiest projects.

The whole job can be completed with a pocket knife. Each pattern gives all 12 of the zodiac designs. All you need do is trace whichever design you want on the wood, then saw or carve it out. Next you paint over the tracings just as the pattern specifies. You may wish to use a woodburning set rather than paint, that's fun too.

DIAMONDS AND PEARLS With the prices of diamonds and pearls being what they are, you can't miss on this project, fellows. To obtain the full-size zodiac scatter pin pattern No. 107 for the 12 signs of the zodiac, send 25 ing of plants, particularly camellias when used as a basic shrub, cannot be overemphasized. When planting camellias by buildings and fences, thought should be directed toward the ultimate size which the plant will attain. Space the basic plants properly.

Then if the planting looks sparse. fill in with another type of plant which can be transplanted or disposed of when crowding begins. Give consideration to the maintenance of the structure. Leave sufficient distance between the plant and the wall for painters to work without breaking down the plants. Proper spacing of C.

japonica varieties is four to six feet apart and at least 2 2 to three feet from any structure. Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso La Canada, just south of Verdugo Blvd. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day of the year.

ation but with the cooperation of the many visitors to Death Valley, this and all other desert plants will be preserved for many others to see for years to come. The "Desert Holly" will not then become another "vanishing American." The same regulations prohibit the cutting of any trees or greens on monument lands, and ranger patrols have been intensified to enforce the regulations. Pyracantha can be used a number of ways trained as a hedge, grown as a foundation plant, espal-iered or otherwise specially trained. Pyracantha and the holly plants discussed in this article are usually started with purchased plants. All can be set out at any tune. Pyracantha seems to get by well with one good soaking a week on sandy soil in hot weather.

You get better, quicker growth with gen erous fertilizing. (Say a cup of ammonium sulfate for 100 square feet of soil twice a year.) FERTILIZER PROGRAM This water and fertilizer program doesn't seem to hurt berry produc tion. Pyracantha needs full sun for best results. Berres are produced on the shoots grown the year before. (Berries on the plant now grew on shoots that came out during the summer of 1953.) Remember this when you prune, Then you won't cut off too much of the wood that will produce the berries.

Another safe bet is to do as much pruning as possible while you can still see where the berries were Shoots that have already fruited can be safely removed pearance of the Strelitzia in an other way. growing it among plants with heavy foliage to ere ate a background for the unusual "birds." The Strelitzia is a long-living evergreen perennial. It is a trunk- less plant, blooming best when left in large clumps. Flowers appear on the plant intermittently through the year, especially in the cool season. SOIL REQUIREMENTS In the coastal areas, plant Stre litzia in full sun; inland, in light shade.

The soil should be rich and highly fertilized. An iron sul fate or acid-base fertilizer applied occasionally will benefit the plants. Divide the clumps of flowers in frequently for best blooming. Here in California, the Bird of Paradise seems especially at home. Its startling flowers and heavy foliage will fit in well in any garden or patio.

When you're at your nurseryman's next time, ask him to show you the Strelit zia reginae. Look over his supply of redwood tubs, too, and plan to grow -this tropical in containers.
