TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1950 THE REGISTER-NEWS MT. VERNON. ILLINOIS COLUMN former Now Deal Stars Return As Spokesmen For Big Business I had to see. The telegraphed Invitation said Hint Bonrrtsley Ruml, Wilson W. Wyatt, Leon Htnderspn and others would be in Potomac Room of the jstaller Hotel between 4 nnd 6 p.

m. It said also they'd ho happy to discuss any questions on the proposed excess profits tax. The names were familiar, but Jkthe faces hadn't been seen in a "long, long time. Who were they? Beardsley Rumi is tlio his, genial, New York businessman with his fingers in so many pies that Us impossible to keep track of them all. He is the man, you'll remember, who invented the Ruml "pay as you go" plan to make income taxes less painful.

That was the idea, anyway. Mr. Ruml has a reputation for tyclng a progressive businessman many liberal ideas which caused the old reactionaries much concern. Wilson Wyatt and Leon Henderson; remember them? Mr. Henderson was the first wartime OPA administrator.

Before that he had been with tlie NRA Blue Eagle outfit of depression days. He was an original New Dealer. He was the particular private, number one de- of big and little business all through the kthat is up to the time things got bad with congres thai President Roosevelt had to let him go. Wilson Wyatt was the Emergency Housing Expediter at the end of the var. Before that he had been the boy wonder mayor of Louisville and a considerable whizz.

But do you remember how the real estate lobby and the home builders' and all the landlords and most congressmen hated him? Charged WiWIh riot ting to Free Enterprise In fact, the principal charge leveled against Henderson and Wyatt was that they wanted to regiment and socialize the country. They wanted to kill private etc. So where were they now? They were up in a private dining room the Statler dishing it out that in excess profits tax on business such as proposed by President Truman was unfair and discriminatory, that it would feed inflation, that M. would stifle growth of business and- be bad for the free enterprise system. Since their departure from government, under Business pressure, as it were, Mr.

Henderson has been In the economic consultant business in Washington. Mr. Wy- atl has returned to the practice of law. They are now known as economic consultant and legal legal counsel respectively for an outfit known as "The Business Committee on Emergency Corporate Taxation." This organization and its background are not without interest. You'll remember that earlier in the year theuc was quite a drive on to repeal federal excise taxes.

Excise (sales) taxes, that is, not the excess profits tax they're talking about now. Anyway, an emergency com mittte on excise taxes was formed then. Such taxes were said to be hurting business. Congress was sold on the idea, and was all ready to repeal many of these excise taxes when along came the Korean war. The committee of business leaders agitating for repeal of such taxes promptly advised congress to forget it.

So the taxes stayed on. Anti-Tax Men Get Busy Again Later in the summer, at the end of the regular session of congress, when it became apparent that the Truman administration wanted a wartime excess profits ax slapped on, lenders of I he old nti-excise tax committee began get busy. They hold a little luncheon meeting in New York on Oct. 1.9. Eleven days later Ihey held a bigger meeting.

Out of it was You'll new know hew good instant cofFoBcon bo until you fry born this Business Committee on Emergency Corporate Taxation. The argument, of the committee Is that It dones't. care how much the government says it, has to raise by taxes on business. The government can name its own figure. But just don't try to collect any of it.

by an excess profits tax. This unusual philosophy, or line, was admitted to be due to the leavening influence of such liberals as Mcssers Ruml, Henderson and Wyatt. So here they were. It. was the kind of brash of them to try to draw- a crowd right at the time when President Truman was having his press conference.

It must be reported that the president out drew the committee by a ratio of about 20 to one. Bt, here they arc. Good old Good old Wilson. Plugging for business now, not trying destroy it as they were accused of doing during the last war. Peanut shells are regarded by most gardeners as excellent material for use in mulching both flowers and vegetables.
