THE VANCOUVER SUN: April lfi. 10 3 HE DISLIKES MOST TELEVISION Darren McGavin Fine Actor Also Hard-Boiled Eoqhead Fred Haney Baseball Commentator HOLLYWOOD UPI 1 Basel ball veteran Fred Hanev b- comes a television peisonality this summer as the nfw commentator for baseball's Game i of the Week. I ActuaUy, it wilf be games of the week, with the ex-manager 1 -i i 01 the Milwaukee Braves broadcasting contests on Saturday and Sunday. Not a colorful linquist like Dizzy Dean, nor a holler guy like Leo Durocher, the quiet, gentlemanly Haney comes to his new job with broadcasting experience in addition to years as player and manager. He is still wearing the world series ring he won with the Braves in 1957.

But with all the junk there is, it's a wonder that there's ever anything decent on TV. 'The trouble lies with the media itself. You can generalize about TV, but not about movies. Today movies are no longer controlled by studios, but by independents. 'There's also the tremendous power of the middleman on TV.

From the mind of the creator until it reaches the set a show goes through a dozen guys each with his personal biases and prejudices. It's a wonder anything's left. MOVIES BEST "Movies are still the finest art media if a man of integrity and vision can make them. I'm just bugging to get my hands on that medium and do what I want to do. Great movies deal with the problems of man's struggle with his internal situation.

External CHANNEL CHUCKLES "And here are a lew books I'D like to Job Awaits Carl Betz new york (upi) -when Greer Garson in Role Carl Betz, TV husband in "The By PAUL KING A busload of sightseers stopped on the "Riverboat" set one day last month. "Oh look." shrieked one woman, "there's Grey Hnl-den." Another almost fell from the window with excitement "Wait 'till I tell my little Jimmy I've seen Mickey Spillane," she shrilled. They were both staring at the same young man. His name is Darren McGavin. In the eyes of his fans he was either a tough, two-fisted private eye, or a tough, two-fisted riverboat captain (depending on which of his two popular TV series they prefer).

But ironically, at the same moment McGavin was staring with blank eyes at the action being shot around him, and seriously pondering: "I often wonder who the hell I really am." CHOSE TV Surprisingly, McGavin wasn't referring to his dual identity in the minds of a million televiewers. He was discussing his identity as a husband and father of three. His identity as an individual. But chiefly his identity as an actor who has come, through choice and circumstance, from Broadway to television. In Hollywood, Darren McGavin is considered one of TV's few fine actors.

He's also considered a hard-boiled egghead. The first I already knew. The second I quickly found out. I talked to him for three hours one afternoon. And right at the first he stated: "Television from an actor's point of view is a little like purgatory in the literal sense.

It's something you have to go through before you become what you want to be." But what did McGavin want? Why did he leave a promising stage career for purgatory? He smiled. 'That's a good question. I work three times as hard now as I did on Broadway. I get half the satisfaction. "I seldom see my children.

But you have to do something to earn a living. And if Riverboat last for three years, I'll leave with a fortune any man would be happy with. WANTS TO PRODUCE "You see," he said, "I want to produce and direct my own movies the way movies should be made. This is simply the means to that end." He paused. "I hated Mike Hammer.

There isn't much I admire about Riverboat. In fact, I dislike most television. "The only reason for any show's existence is to illuminate some aspect of our life today. TV is predominantly pure escapist fare. "It's so utterly meaningless except for a momentary tickling of a funnybone.

"IT'S FRIGHTENING" "If ratings have any truth at all, it's frightening that the public like that trash. INCORPORATED 2 MAY I67C. Actress Keeps Straight Face HOLLYWOOD UPI Pro forces matter little. Yet these elements are all TV is mainly concerned with. "When will the TV producers learn that they must search for trulh? It's a difficult query. You have to involve yourself completely to search it out.

Truth is only as deep as the character's involvement. But TV avoids the inner search to exploit the surface struggles. "Masses have lived through plagues," McGavin said. Then throwing his arms in the air, he cried: 'But they BRIDGE by Jacoby By OSWALD JACOBY I could not see the East and My teammate and valued!
