TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1950 THE REGISTER-NEWS MT. VERNON, ILLINOIS HARPO MARX TO SPE AK FIRST TIME IN 25 YEARS By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 17. For the first time in 25 years, Harpo Marx is going to speak before an audience. Harpo is the mute, wild-wigged character who chased blondes in filmdom's most famous brother act.

Now that the Minxes have gone their separate ways professionally, Harpo is embarking on a concert tour. And he says he's Ingoing to talk. "I thought I'd do it this way," he said in a spacious Beverly Hills home. "I would be playing the harp and one of the strings would break. I'd say That would break the silence and then I'd talk to the audience and explain why I never spoke." The story begins a (junrler- century ago when the Marx brothers were touring vaudeville.

They were doing a 25-minute sketch and Harpo had two comedy bits. One was in pantomine, which drew a lot of laughs, and the other was dialogue, which didn't. So the brothers decided to lengthen the pantomine routine and cut out the other, Harpo never )ke again. RKl'ORTS HAVE IT THAT IIARl'O was once offered $50,000 to say a line in a movie, but he turned it down. While this is dubious history, it adds to the Strangely enough, Harpo is the most talkative of the Mnrxes.

He spoke enthusastically about his new tour. He will travel to 60 U. S. cities in 60 days with a show chich is aptly titled "Harpo's Bazaar." Among other things it will offer a Metropolitan Opera soprano and a pair of ballet men who toss around a couple of live Boa Constrictors. Harpo is looking forward to the tour, despite the grind of one- '4 night stands.

lie is anxious to see the towns he visited as a vaudeville lad. Harpo spent much time preparing for the tour. Ho practiced the harp for two hours daily and spent the rest of the morning playing the piano and dreaming up gags. "I've got to keep busy," be said. "I've got four kids to buy shoes for." THE BROTHERS ARK STILL 4 firm about doing no more pictures together, except a final one based on their own lives.

It will be taken from Kyle Chrichton's hook about the boys. But as far as making another straight comedy, Harpo said "We've done all the gags; why do them again?
