It's Brand New Game "Unfortunately, the B.C. Fund cannot be used for capital expenses of this type." Unfortunately is the operative word.

From time to time in this prose corner your agent has harpooned the provincial government's fitness and amateur sports fund because the $600,000 a year it generates cannot be used to meet the most important needs to amateur sport in B.C. facilities and equipment. As a public relations catchall to provide a sprinkling of funds for everything from tiddleywinks to fivepins and bocce ball, it doubtlessly serves a pre-ordained purpose. As a means of helping serious young B.C. athletes to upgrade their skills in Olympic and other amateur sports of international and national character, it is of little value.

It's a tribute to their determination to excel, and to the volunteer coaches who have encouraged and helped them to this end, that B.C. athletes always have been among Canada's best. They have succeeded despite a woeful lack of adequate facilities. But those heroic days are ending because much of the rest of the world is getting the facilities and the fulltime coaching that today's athletes need to reach and stay in the front rank of competition. Ah, Those Glory Days Sturdy's game rowing is a prime example.

When he joined the UBC-Vancouver Rowing Club eight the season following its silver medal win at the Rome Olympics in 1960, B.C. was known around the globe as a producer of world class oarsmen. Starting in 1954, B.C. crews consistently had won gold or silver medals, or both, at Olympic, Commonwealth and Pan-Am Games. But the glory days ended in the early 1960s.

Half a dozen-' European countries, led by Germany and Czechoslovakia, came stroking by with faster, more modern equipment; with techniques and teamwork honed on first class practice water, i and with crews that were the cream of popular, broadly-based rowing programs. Down Among the Lilies The days when a handful of dedicated UBC students could get together and produce a world-class crew on the cluttered, debris-filled water of Coal Harbor were at an end. B.C. no longer is a world power. Or even a Canadian power.

The situation here today is this: Coal Harbor is in worse shape than ever. As a rowing course, it's a joke. UBC's million-dollar plan for a breakwater-protected course on the north arm. of the Fraser is still just that a plan. Burnaby Lake has the central location, the still water and the necessary length to be a world.class course.

But 20 years ago the water level was dropped to increase the drainage potential and since then it has been impossible to see the lake for the water lilies. Nonetheless, it is still headquarters for the Burnaby Lake Aquatic Association, which tries to conduct canoeing and water skiing, as well as rowing, on the 60-foot wide lane that somehow has been chopped through the lily pads. For $100,000 the lake could be completely dredged and' turned into a world class course. For less than another $50,000 a boathouse could be built and stocked with racing shells. If all this were done, B.C.'s rowing community would multiply and likely regain its lost international stature.

This is the sort.of project into which sizable chunks of that fitness and amateur sports fund money should be channelled. This is where it could help Jbuild champions.
