Attending the ceremony were Mrs. Freder'f Lasserre, Chancellor Mrs.

Frank Ross, Dr. Norman Mackenzie, retiring UBC president, and Dr. A. W. Trupmen.

Of the Canada Council. Mrs. Lasserre is the widow of the former head of UBC's architecture depaitment after whom the building is named. He was killed in a cKinbing accident in England i year ago. The centre is located on a former parking lot betweei, the administration building and the faculty club.

Dr. Trueman, whose Canada Council paid half the cost, said the centre will be a stimulus to the arts in British Columbia. "The role of the university in fostering the arts is a natural and logical trend," he said. "And I don't think there are any grounds for fears that the arts will become too stuffy and academic." When the centre is completed it also will contain teaching theatre, art gallery, and anthropology museum. of the B.C.

George Vancouver's 200th er 205th birthday will be celebrated June 22. Tuesday afternoon city council approved Aid. Bert Emery's program for the 200th anniversary of the explorer's birth. But Capt. Vancouver was born June 22.
