ALVAREZ: Weeks in Bed Ruin Morale By DR. WALTER C. ALVAREZ Emeritus Consultant in Medicine. Mayo CUnlc As wc all know, if physicians and nurses in a rest home make a strong effort, they can get many an old person out of bed, and eventually make him strong enough to go to the table for his meals. Doubtless, in all good rest homes, those in charge will make efforts early to prevent weakness in muscles and stiff joints which can later cause an old person to become bed fast. Once, hen in my early 70's an illness kept me in bed for only two weeks, I was surprised to find how weak my legs were when I left hospital. They were so weak that In order to get back my strength I had to spend some time each evening, walking up and down the hall. If in two weeks this could happen to an athletic walker like me.

what might happen to a weak old person who, because of a stroke or a broken hip, had to be kept in bed for two months? In such cases, a physio therapist might go to work early to keep the patient's muscles in condition. All of us who deal with disabling diseases must avoid a common fault, which is to treat actively the acute stage of an illness, while failing to worry about the possible late crippling of the person which might well demoralize and discourage him. As every good director of a nursing home knows, different people respond differently to a chronic disabling illness. Some who probably have always been hard drivers and possessed of a strong character and strong will, will immediately go to work, learning to talk and walk again. Others, who perhaps were always a bit dependent on someone, or without a strong will to live, make poor patients.
