Fire of unknown origin in dry grass near a largo warehouse of Decker Buekirmster, wholesale hay dealers. In West Main Street, resulted In a fire alarm this afternoon. Prompt work on the part of the. fire department prevented the spread of the flames to the. warehouse where a large quantity of hay Is stored.

July 7. The last II months have shown the greatest era tn improvements ever had In Redlands. It Is evident from the rec- ords of the fiscal year now being prepared py O. P. Hook, city clerk.

While In the 1924 period assessments for improvements amounted to but assessments in th last fiscal year totaled I17P.707.&3, and many other major Improve ments are either still under way or will come up In the nest six months, among these being the Pan Mateo sewer, paving of the University tract, extension of Beacon street and others of lesser magnitude. The largest single lmproement last year was the paving of Orange Street north of Colton Avenue, with an assessment cost of $23.774. S3. Next In value to this was the paving of High Avenue, with sidewalks and curbing, at several places, costing 114.515.13, and' this was almost equaled by the widening of Eat Citrus Avenue, paving of Buena Vista Street, paving of Alta Street, each of which called for assessments of more than $12,000. Putting the improvements on a mileage basis, more than five mtlep of paving was laid, miles of sewer made, more than one mile of ornamental lights installed, and numerous small jobs of sidewalks and putters.

Two streets. Orange and Third, were paved with asphalt, bringing the cost in these instances above the proportion in other contracts. One street was slated to be widened. This Is East Citrus Avenue, and the assessment total 1 13.759 10 so far In acquiring property. Details of the various Improve ments in the last 12 record-breaking months are: Paving of alleys in Block Town Plat, and Block Orange Grove addition.

Miss Ruth Crane. While on a bike about two miles from camp the Judge and Miss Crane bagged a large rattlesnake and his honor was today exhibiting a fine diamond-back skin. Larson that the two men In a large car had followed him for several miles and had finally crowded him Into a stone wall at the side of the high way and attacked him. Trotter Is employed by Thomas Rameriz, a wholesale butcher do ing business throughout the citrus belt and is said to have been re turning from a delivery trip on which he had collected about 11. This is the second similar hold up in the Cucamonga district within eight days.

On the night of June 3) J. C. Blair, an Insurance agent residing at 4n East I Street, was robbed of ISO in cash and $90 In checks while changing a tire on Archibald Avenue. Trotter was taken to the hos pital by p. O.

Frange, who resides near the scene of the hldup, and by John Herman, ZM Street, San Bernardino. Trotter was attended at the hospital by Dr. John B. Craig. The full extent of his injuries are unde termined.

Young Tennessee Fugitive 'Jimmies' Padlock on Cell Door ONTARIO. July 7. John Vaughn, 17 years old, arrested here for Sheri'f J. P. McCain, of Union City, where he is wanted for jail breaking, today made an unsuccess ful attempt to escape from the Ontario city Jail.

When Ontario officers this after noon went to remove Vaughn and Ben Olivaa. another prisoner, to the county jail, they discovered that the lock od Vaughn's cell had been tampered with. Efforts to unlock the cell door proved tn vain. It was necessary to cut off the heavy padlock. When some one remarked that Vaughn -might have to remain in jail without food, the boy replied that he would rather starve to death than go back to Tennessee.

He is reported to have been Jailed there for larceny. Vaughn came to Ontario about three weeka ago and was employed at a restaurant when arrested. Mr. and Mrs. George MeKanzie spent the week-end in San Diego. Spontaneous combustion caused a fire at 1 clock this morning that resulted In SI. 500 damage to the stock building of the Jones Toy Factory at Ninth Street and the Santa Fe tracks.

OHvas was arrested at his home. 815 East Nevada Street, on a battery charge preferred by Mrs. Isabel Belard The woman stated the man had visited her home, 620 East Park Street, at 5 a. m. and accused her of "stepping out" with another man.

When she resented his woras, ne slapped her face and otherwise roughly handled her, she said In court. When OHvas appeared In the po lice court before Judge George R- Holbrook. he entered a plea of guilty and drew a sentence of 60 days in the county Jail. He waa committed this afternoon. Robert Paine won the cup In Class play of the Junior golf tournament at San Gabriel yesterday and rhilllpa Flnlay won the driving contest with 741 yards made by three balls. With Franklin Smith, also cf Red-lands, Hnaly was in Class A play, shooting an 82 gross and Smith an 84 gross over the long course. Paine divided honors for best gross scores In the Class events with Dan Tripp of Redlands, each shooting a 93.

The pavlcu? of Roosevelt Road, Beacon to Highland Avenue, Is scheduled for this fall probably, and projicts now in view, on which assessment maps will be approved this summer, are the paving of Uni versity Tract, paving of Linda Place, and laying of sidewalks and gutters on Daisy Avenue.
