15. Bobby Jones, In an open letter to the contributors to the $30,000 fund to purchase him a homo here as a tribute of tho esteem and affection from friends and admirers in his native city, last night explained why he-announced recently In New York that ho would not retain tho gift. "At tho time the gift was made to mc, It appealed to mo as tho most generous and sincere tribute which a man's friends could pay him," suld the British open and American amateur national golf champion, in his letter, "and it was accepted by mo in the spirit which I knew It was tendered. I knew there was nothing connected with the subscription of the fund or the use to which It was to be put, which was not entirely proper. A portion of the general public Is aware of that fact, also, but It seems that another still respectable portion entertains some doubts.

"It was to avoid any chance of misunderstanding that I decided that the best thing to do was to re turn the home. As I remarked, when I accepted the gift, by far the most Important part of It was the testimonial and tribute which my friends sought to make me. I am now In possession of that testi monial." Bobby declared that in returning the gift ho was "losing only the least part of the gift," and that whatever loss he mlijht feel, "will be more than made up by the gain to amateur golf." 10. "The members of the association feel, with me, that a period of six months Is sufficient for any champion to engage In whatever non-title matches he desires, and that the public demands action from him, as far as the defense of his crown is concerned, at the expiration of that time," President Donohue said. "It is of no consequence to the association in what city, or state. Walker, Dundee and Mandell defend their respective titles, so long as they sign for their defense within the next 30 days In bouts to decisions. "None of the three tltleholders against whom the association Is taking action has offered for competition within the last six months the title he wears.

Course Changed Account Storm The course as originally laid out was once around the Island, a dis tance of about 40 miles, but this was abandoned when a stiff north wester came up after midnight last night and whipped the seas on the outer stde of the Island Into plunging waves considered too dangerous for the frail craft.
