Oudiih Crist, NBC-TV (Todiy Show) "LIZA MINNELU IN 'CABARET A CT A KSRHRMt" -frtwewea. By KEN WALLACE Entertainment Editor The program probably will say that Selma Diamond is a writer moonlighting as an actress. Or an actress moonlighting as a writer.

Selma Diamond, who will be at the Playhouse on the Mall In Paramus in "Sabrina Fair," lets you 1 for yourself. "Either or both," the gravelly-voiced Miss Diamond will tell you. "Take your pick. You know, there's really not so great a difference as you might think; 'r allied arts, you might say." In a voice that has all the nerve-calming quality of finger nails scraping on a slate board, the talented Selma Dia- wwim. Magazine Tuesday, Kennedy will be visiting familiar ground.

There he first tried out his star-studded revival of "The Front Page" before its highly-suc--sessful Broadway run. Not so long ago, he also brought another revival, "Light Up the Sky," with Sam Levene and Kitty Carlisle, to the Playhouse stage. As in his other plays, Kennedy has a role in "Sabrina Fair," as well as being the director. He plays Larrabee, the senior who'd rather attend a tastefully-staged funeral than make more millions on Wall Street. Selma Diamond first tried acting and liked it when she did the Kay Medford role in a summer touring version of "Bye, Bye Birdie" with Andy Williams.

She also did the Kay Medford role with Sam Levene in "Don't Drink the Water." Another one of her touring plays was with Jackie Coogan in "Come Blow Your Horn," and she was in Kennedy's "Light Up the Sky," too, playing Frances Black, wisecracking wife of the producer. Her latest TV stints Include episodes of "Arnie" and "MacMillan and Wife." both to the show's host and Its audience. She was one of Jack Paar's favorites. Probably the best known of her films was "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" in which she played Spencer Tracy's wife. She did another film for Universal and she'll be in "Bang the Drums Slowly," a film not yet released which she did for Rosenfeld Productions under the direction of John Hancock.

"I remember that name," she wryly commented, "cause It sounded so story book." She's had at least one book, "Nose Jobs for World Peace" which was published by Prentice-Hall. In "Sabrina Fair," which is being revived by Harold J. Kennedy for a summer circuit swing, Miss Diamond plays Julia Ward McKintock, the magazine executive-writer who is convalescing from an operation at the Long Island home of millionaire Larra-bee. By her caustic style many of the funny lines of Samuel Taylor's comedy are added spice in the pudding. When he brings "Sabrina Fair" to the Playhouse on the Mall for a week's run opening not 1 i Too busy, I guess.

How did she get started in show business? "Hmm. You know, I couldn't put my finger on it, how or why or when. Seems to me I just started to hand out jokes to comedians and before you knew it I was writing for them." 'They Include some of the top names in the entertainment world. She did remember the i a least she thiaks it was her first writing job, doing scripts for Ozzia and Harriet. She wrote for Tailulah Bankhead, for Milton Berle's TV shows, for Sid Caesar, and Perry Como.

Which provoked this question: wasn't there quite a difference writing for Caesar and Como? "Don't forget," Miss Diamond reminded, "When I'd write for the Como show it would be for many guests, too. I knew them all and it was no problem for me to supply material that suited." On the TV talk shows Selma Diamond became known to millions.
