IS THE RECORD, TTEDNTSDAY, JOE 23, I9T1 Klute5 Proves Enjoyable Psycho Filni CHANDLERS half-yearly (aS) Lively Arts SHOE A IF Like so many current films that try to whomp some life into old plots with snappy camerawork, tough, intelligent dialogue, and above-average acting, "Klute" is almost by definition a lightweight formula movie. However, with "Klute." which stars Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland, there have been some creative minds doing the rehashing, and it is' not at all stale. In fact, it's quite enjoyable. This is the familiar story of a lady menaced by a psychopath and rescued by the hero just in the nick of time, of course. Miss Fonda plays a very high-priced call girl, the only person who may be able to identify a sadist who has killed before and, if breathy, anonymous phone calls the girl keeps getting are any indication, seems ready to kill again.

The killer is thought to be a John Crittenden she can tell herself she's the best actress in the world, even if only for an hour and for an audience of one. She tells all of this and more to her psychiatrist, a kindly woman who seems infinitely more compassionate than most movie shrinks these days. There's plenty of local color too. the story being set in the high spots and low spots of Manhattan. Trying to find other call girls who may remember being beaten by the killer, the girl and her protector visit high-class brothels, no-class whorehouses, and are on the city streets a bit.

That this New York looks somehow different and more interestingly photographed than the New Yorks of most other pictures is to director Alan J. Pakula's credit. Also in the film's favor are the stars' performances. Miss Fonda and Sutherland certainly are big enough and secure enough to have rested on their laurels and to have given merely adequate perform-ances. Instead, their work betters the film, making it more interesting and more believable than most of the movies the top stars make between their major successes.

"Klute" opened today at the Cinerama and Murray Hill Theaters in Manhattan. result is as the Hollywood hacks say good chemistry. But, "Klute" is a bit more than a modern "Perils of Pauline," with girls snatched at the last minute from arms of the villain by the man she loves. It is also an interesting, i superficial, psychological study of the girl, who is more intelligent and self aware than most in her profession, we assume. She quits renting herself out regularly, to try for acting and modeling jobs, but she goes bark to it now and again usually after a turndown at an interview because it gives her a sense of control, a feeling she's needed.

She says if she can make a man happy, missing executive of the company Sutherland works for in Pennsylvania, and Sutherland is assigned by his boss to track the man down. This throws Miss Fonda and Sutherland together, and the 1 VX 1 VJ" 1 -r were 7.99 to 9.99 5.98 were 10.99 to 16.99 798 Boost your shoe wardrobe with timely styles from our regular stock. Of the more than 1,500 members of the Screen Actors Guild casting votes at a mass meeting, only three were against strike authorization, a guild spokesman said. He said other meetings were held across the country and the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of giving the Guild's board of directors the power to call a strike.
