In 1913 when the present state board of education was organized, the state had 13,070 children In the kindergarten; now we have 37.896. Eight years ago we had children in the elementary schools; last year wo had the Increase In high school enrollment in the same period haa been even more phenomenal, from 65,925 to 196,000. In the near future we shall have 200,000 young people in high schools. We have now the largest high school enrollment of any state in the Union, and when California educators in visits to big states like New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois refer to this fact, the teachers there do not believe them; they just think it is another case of "California liars."
