H. Bowen celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on February 13, at their home on South Washington street. February 23 Ray Blades, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals was signally honored Thursday night, Feb. 16, ait a banquet given at the Elder factory building, under auspices of Che 'local Izaak Walton League.

Branch Rickey and Dr. Cameron Harmon were the speakers. June 1 The postoffice was moved on Wednesday night to its new location on South Jackson street and was open for business this morning. M. E.

Clark purchased the (first stamp; Mrs. Virginia Prendergast received the first mail; Roy Phipps mailed the first letter and G. Gersbacher mailed the first parcel post. June 22 Allen Newman Lasater, son of Mr. and Mrs.

A. T. Lasater passed the examination at the US Military Academy, Annapolis, on June 15th. August 17 Messrs. Wimberly and Connaway of Dix, 111., have just return ed from St.

Louis, where they have been selecting fixtures and supplies for the Western Auto Store which they will open here soon. August 24 Miss Vada Faye Johnson daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C. W.

Johnson was recently chosen Miss Illinois, in competition with girls from oth er counties in a National contest sponsored by the United Cinema Production company. October 19 The new court house will be officially dedicated here Friday, October 20, with an all day program. November 16 The Catholic Church Parish of Enfield will celebrate the dedication of the new church and rectory near Enfield on Thanksgiv- day, November 23. November 30 Hamilton county gets its first producting oil well this week. It was drilled by the Texas Company on the Schelenbaum farm in the Aden district.

1940 February 1 Shelby Clark, 17-year-old McLeansboro jockey, who booted home (his first winner at Fair Grounds Race Track, New Orleans on January 6th is expected to become one of the brightest stars of the turf, according to veteran horsemen. March 31 Uncle Boyce Mayberry, one of Hamilton County's two surviving veterans of the Civil War, celebrated his 95th birthday at his home in Mayberry Township on March 18. April 11 girls and a boy, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ebert French of Flannigan township on Sunday morning April 7.

Y. will locate in McLeansboro and take over Dr. Paul Q. Peterson's office about June 1. Dr.

Vickers ds a graduate of the University of Illinois. June 13 The Times-Leader, this week announces the formal opening of Maurice E. Clark's new service station, located at the intersection of state highways 14 and 142. Mr. Clark ds the local distributor for the City Service products.

June 27 Danny King, former assistant of the Illinois Brokerage Store at Centralia, has been appointed manager of the Illinois Brokerage Store here, succeeding David Holdren. August 1 The '120th Anniversary of the organization of Ten Mile Baptist Church will be celebrated August 4, when the Annual home coming and basket dinner will be held. August 22 Dr. W. W.

Hall, wlho practiced medicine here for more than half a century and was well known throughout Southern Illinois, died early Saturday morning. October 24 Dr. Roland R. Cross of Dahlgren was recently appointed State Public Health Director by Governor John Stelle, upon the resignation of Dr. A.

C. Baxter. Dr. Cross received his commission Tuesday and is now in charge of the department in the state capitol. October 31 The Hamilton County holder of the first draft number in the national draft lottery No.

158, was Clyde Douglas Manning, a clerk employed at the Toggery Clothing Store here. 1941 January 16 Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Deen of near Walpole, quietly celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary at the home of their daughter, Mrs.

George Burnett, and family. Mr. Deen was born in. Tennessee 88 years ago. Mrs.

Deen is 84. January 23 Marvin J. Carlton principal of the local high school, was elected preaideint of the Southern Divis ion of Illinois Education Associa tion at Carbondale last Thursday. April 10 A business change of interest was announced this week by Lee Donelson, who has taken over the C.

M. Sneed Funeral Home, which will henceforth be conductel as the Donelson Funeral Home. May 22 On Tuesday, May 27, Piopolis wall celebrate its 100 years of existence with a general home coming and basket dinner. July 24 Hamilton County's last Civil War veteran, W. R.

Daniel, passed away Monday at the age of 96 years. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, Wednesday. August 21 Cooperating with the movement to provide a necessary service for our soldier boys and defense work ers, a Hamilton County Chapter of USO wtas formed here Thursday night. M. L.

Hunt was named chairman, Herman E. Gibbs as Treasurer and Miss Eurydyce Baldwin as secretary. September 4 M. L. Hunt, County Superintendent of Schools, for the past 18 years, received a letter from the Postmaster General, notifying him of his appointment as acting postmaster of the local post office to suceeed John W.

October 23 An agreement has been reached by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union, CIO, and the Elder Manufacturing Company, call ing for a closed shop at the Elder Factory in McLeansboro, and a small increase in wages for all employees. December 18 Hamilton County's first casualty as a result of the war with Japan, was reported here Friday evening by Mr. and Mrs. Herman Johnson, of near McLeansboro, who were officially notified by the Navy Department of the death of their 18-year old son Ross Johnson.

WILLIAMS ANGUS FARM 1942 January 1 A most unusual and happy occasion wias celebrated at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Harper on Sunday, December 28 when the well known and much loved couple observed their 60th wedding anniversary. February 19 Members of Local Union 403, Amalgamated Clother Workers, at tlic Elder Shirt Factory, have formed a Volunteer Defense Saving Club at their last meeting. March 26 The Texas Company is starting work on a new $3,500,000 oil refinery to be located in the Hood- vdlle oil field about four miles south of town.

April 16 The (fourth registration of the Selective Service System for men between the ags of 46 and 64 will be. held April 27. May 7 During the first three days of the sugar registration period and up until Wednesday night 11,490 Hamilton county sugar consumers had filled out form R301 application for Ration Book. Cline of this city has announced May 12 as the date for the formal opening of his new hospital, which was completed and opened to patients several weeks ago. June 4 St. Louis University conferred degrees upon 663 graduates Tuesday, including M. Wendell Carlton of McLeansboro. Carlton received a doctor of dental surgery degree.

June 11 McLeansboro became the first town in Illinois and perhaps the first in the US to participate 100 per cent in the allotment plan for the purchase of war bonds and stamps. July 9 Charles Benjamin Huggins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Huggins became a Midshipman in the US Navy at Annapolis, on July 4th. September 24 Mr.

and Mrs. John Reyling of Dahlgren township, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Monday, September 14 at St. John's church, Piopolis. November 4 A surprise victory in the war against tuberculosis was scored last Tuesday, when a proposition to provide a special tax to care for tuberculosis patients in Hamilton county carried by a vote of 2912 to 1204. November 19 A total of 2316 automobile owners registered for gasoline ration books last week.

Three motorcycles also registered. November 26 A few new families moved into McLeansboro last week with the expressed intention of working in the Texas Company plant near Hoodville. Betty York of Bunker Hill won first honors in the county spelling contest, Saturday. 1943 January 21 John M. Daniel, commonly known as Jack Daniel, has severed his connection with this paper, 'after more than twenty years of service on the Times-Leader.

February 4 One of the most disastrous fires an recent years broke out this morning in the Superior Cleaners establishment from a defective wiring or in the rear of Dan Riser's Plumbing Shop. The Superior Cleaners and Kiser's Plumbing Shop were a complete loss. Wright's Lumber Yard was badly damaged with a loss estimated at $25,000. March 11 A real estate transaction was completed this week in which the large brick home at 500 South Washington, known as the A. A.

Lasater home was sold by Dr. W. A. Barter to Edwin T. Jones, local undertaker.

August Robert Wilson, county superintendent elect until recently, assumed his duties as such last Monday, August 2. He succeeded Lodge Grant, who has been county superintendent of schools since 'his appointment in January 1942. August 19 On the Northeast corner of the suare in this city an old landmark two-story frame has stood for more than 70 years, and it was considered to be one of the finest in McLeansboro when erected in 1869. It has been razed to make room for a modern 'building. It has been recently used as an office for J.

W. Wright Son. November 18 For gallantry in action on the battlefields of Italy, Lieut. Val Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs.

Fred Smith, has been awarded the Purple Heart. Lieut. Smith received wounds that will keep him confined to the hospital for several months. December 9 Miss Marge Bowling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Wm. M. Bowling now has honor of being the first lady Marine from Hamilton county. She left Monday for Camp Lejeune, New River, North Carolina, where she will receive her basic training. 1944 January 6 Word was received last Thursday by Mr.

and Mrs. M. L. Hunt, stating that their son Captain John Hunt of the Army Air Force stationed in India, had bee reported as missing in action over Burma. January 24 Technical Sergeant Marion Lee Daily who recently returned from England is visiting ihis father W.

F. Daily. Sgt. Daily is a radioman-gunner on a B-47 Flying CENTENNIAL EDITION Fortress, has participated in 25 successful raids over enemy territory and has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the ALT Medal and three Oak Leaf Clusters. March 9 The Dale Grade School taught by Ebb Hargrave, won the county grade basketball tournament held hero Friday and Saturday at the High School gym.

June 1 Cecil M. Allen reported today that he had been notified of his appointment as the Agricultural chairman for the 5th War Loan Drive. Auto Use Stamps in the denomination of $5.00 will be placed on sale at the post office on Saturday, June 10. June 15 The 24th District Convention, of the American Legion in session at Carmi, June 11th unanimously endorsed Captain John Stelle for National Commander. June 29 An Independence Day program in honor of the 55 service men from this church will be given at the Christian Church, Sunday night, July 2, at 8 o'clock.

One gold star will be added in memory of Lt. Charles Wm. Baker, who was killed in a plane crash. July 6 Mrs. Delores Cook Lee, this week received for the War De- fpartment in Washington, papers notifying her that her husband Staff Sgt.

Emmerson E. Lee, who iwas killed in action has been awarded the Purple Heart. Sgt. Lee was the son of Mr. and Mrs.

John Lee of near this city. August 10 The American Legion Post has on display in the windows of the Legion Hall on the East Side, a large German Swastikt banner which was taken from the wall of the office of the German Commander at Cherbourg, France, by Lt. John A. Stelle. August 17 First Lieut.

Leroy Dale Tate, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Tate of this city, was recently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross "tor extra-ordinary courage in aerial flight as pilot of a heavy bomber." September 7 Cpl. Romt. E.

Biggerstaff, who hasbeen a prisoner of war in Rumania, since May 7, 1944, is now back with his squadron in Italy, having been released from the prison camp shortly after Rumania declared war on Germany. October 5 Gov. John W. Bricker of Ohio, Republican candidate for vice- President, passed through this city last Tuesday afternoon, his train arriving here at 4 p. m.

While this school is the smallest school in McLeansboro and has often been referred to as the "Little School," it has the distinction of being the first school in (this city to announce the launching of a campaign for the purpose of financing a piece of Army Mobile equipment. March 29 Announcement is made this week of the opening of the Hamilton County Service Company, in McLeansboro, under the sponsorship of the Farm Bureau, with Simon C. Peter named as truck sales man for the new concern.

May 24 Girls who are employed at the dress factory located on the public square were given a richly deserved tribute at the Bond Drive meeting held in the Capitol Theater here Monday evening. Foy Love, chairman of the payroll deductions, in a few well chosen words in which he complimented the employees of the factory for service beyond the requirements of duty" in purchasing bonds. He awarded the Minute Man Flag to Bydia Mae Bethel, representing tiha workers. July 12 Ed Rice, formerly associated' with the DeLuxe Cleaners announces the opening of the McLeansboro Laundry, ready to extend service to all who find it more convenient to send their laundry out. September 13 Last Wednesday evening the First Baptist Church vote to purchase ground for a recreation park for the young people of the church.

The ground purchased is just north of the church and was owned by Mr. Mike Smithpeters. September 27 Anita Farlow graduated from Northwestern Law School, Sept. 21st, becoming Hamilton County's first woman lawyer. November 29 John Stelle, former governor of Illinois and one of fhe foundesr of the American Legion, was elected National Commander at the American Legion National Convention in Chicago, last week.

December 6 Mr. S. H. Shepard, chairman of the Hamilton County War Price and Rationin Board today announced that the board in this county will be consolidated with the White County board. The Store was one of the most modern of any found in McLeansboro. In June of Gillie Kirsh well-known local personality took over the reins as manager of the store. In the Fall of 1953 the Bracy Food Store decided to give the town of McLeansboro a better store so they underwent a major change in remodeling by adding a vacant store building that was adjacent to the building which housed the Bracy Food Store at that The work was given to one of our local contractors, Mr. Marion Sneed. Upon the completeion of this building the Supermarket was one of the largest stores and most beautiful stores found anywhere in Southern Illinois and boasted of the fact that it has the largest floor space of any store in the City of McLeansboro shelves of the store are full of food bargains and complete in every respect.

The store is operated by one of the most reliable staffs that could be found anywhere. In the checking department is Ira Dycus who incidentally has been with the store since it first opened here in 1949) and Doris Jane Robinson. In the Meat department is Roy Newton, Head Butcher and Kendall Keaton. In the produce department is Marvin Thomas and in the stocking department is Richard Auten. Mr.

Harry Bracy, owner of the local store is no stranger in McLeansboro having been here in 1926 running what was known then as the Thrifty stores. In 1929 he sold the store and then returned in 1949 with his new modern and up to date store. The policy of the store is courteous service to all. The policy of Mr. Harry Bracy is to give the people of McLeansboro the highest quality merchandise at the lowest possible market price.
